1.5 kW VFD: single-phase 220 V or three-phase 380 V, where we start

1.5 kW is one of our most popular sizes for small installations. Typical customer this year: a private craftsman with a small machine tool, a farmer with a borehole pump, a co-op with a greenhouse fan. The first thing we ask in the shop: what supply do you have on site. For a domestic single-phase 220 V network we take single-phase models (1ph 220 V input, 3ph 220 V output) — there are plenty of these at 1.5 kW. For an industrial 380 V motor we take three-phase. A single-phase drive will not start a three-phase 380 V motor, so this is question number one.

The current rule of thumb is simple. A 1.5 kW motor on 380 V draws about 3.5-3.7 A, so take a drive rated from 3.7 A output. A 1.5 kW motor on 220 V pulls 7-7.5 A, so the drive needs 7 A output and up. If the motor nameplate is closer to 4 A (380 V), some headroom helps — look at 2.2 kW.

For 1.5 kW the budget Chinese brands move fastest, because overpaying for premium European on this rating for a pump or a machine tool makes no sense. 1.5 kW VFD: when this rating is the right choice
