LiFePO4 batteries: how much capacity for your inverter

We ship LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) into 9 out of 10 new solar installs in 2024-2026. Lead-acid AGM is gone from our shop: 50% depth-of-discharge versus 90-95% on lithium, three times fewer cycles, 5-7 year service life versus 15-20. The one weak spot of LiFePO4 (poor charging below -10°C) we cover with a built-in heating board or by mounting the bank in a heated cabinet.

Our typical customer this year: a 100-150 m² house with a 5-8 kW hybrid inverter. We ship one 10 kWh module for overnight autonomy: fridge plus router plus a few lights. If they want to survive a full sunless day, we go to 15 or 25 kWh, or cascade two 10 kWh units. We ask up front: which inverter do you have. Because the battery BMS and the CAN/RS485 protocol must match the inverter firmware. Deye works with one list. Veichi with another. Felicity is more universal but still has its caveats.

What we ask before you order LiFePO4

First question: which inverter is installed or planned. Without that we will not size the capacity. Second: where it sits. If the bank lives in an unheated outdoor cabinet, the internal heater is mandatory. Otherwise winter charging stops below -5°C. Inside a warm utility room any model from our catalog will do. Third: planning horizon. One battery now or cascade expansion later. Felicity LPBA and LPBF allow parallel banks of up to 16 modules. Rosen in rack format scales by adding units. Veichi VCLB is easier for wall mount as a single block.

Manufacturer warranty on LiFePO4 in our shop runs 5 to 10 years. Felicity LPBA carries 10 years. We ship same-day from our Kyiv warehouse. Regional delivery via Nova Poshta or Delivery in 1-3 days. Before any order we double-check the battery-to-inverter protocol against the manufacturer datasheet. Compatibility mistakes are rare among our customers, but the cost of getting it wrong is high.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LiFePO4 and how does it differ from an ordinary lithium battery?

LiFePO4 stands for lithium iron phosphate. Search queries sometimes mislabel it lithium iron polymer. Against the lithium-cobalt and NMC cells used in electronics and electric vehicles it stores less energy per kilogram, but it handles heat far better and survives many more cycles. For stationary home storage that trade works out: weight and volume bother nobody here, whereas fire resistance and cycle count decide everything, because the pack sits inside a dwelling and runs there for years.

Why is a 48 V LiFePO4 battery labelled 51.2 V?

Sixteen series cells at 3.2 V each come to exactly 51.2 V, and that is the pack's nominal voltage. The 48 V figure comes down from lead-acid practice, which is how inverter battery inputs are still labelled. If the inverter datasheet says 48 V, a 51.2 V pack is what it wants. Size the reserve in kWh: 100 Ah at 51.2 V gives 5.12 kWh, 200 Ah gives 10.24 kWh.

Will a LiFePO4 battery work with my inverter?

It will, provided the inverter has a low-voltage 48 V battery input. Such an input is found on Deye SUN SG05LP1 and SG04LP3 hybrid inverters, and on Veichi VHS, VHT and SI series - that is, on most of what we carry. Once installed, connect the CAN or RS485 bus and pick your battery protocol in the inverter menu. Otherwise it estimates charge from voltage, and the LiFePO4 discharge curve is flat enough to make that estimate crude.

Which LiFePO4 batteries are in stock?

Three brands: Felicity, Rosen and Veichi, all at 51.2 V. Capacities run 5.12, 8.7, 10, 10.24, 12.5, 15, 17.5 and 25 kWh, in wall-mounted modules and rack units for cabinet installation. Capacity scales by paralleling modules. Use identical models and ideally one production batch: mixing modules makes the BMS balance the array to its weakest unit, and part of the capacity of the rest is lost to you.

Can LiFePO4 be charged in freezing weather?

Discharging below zero is fine, charging is not. Charging under 0 °C plates metallic lithium onto the anode and permanently removes capacity. The built-in BMS blocks charging on its temperature sensor, but that protection should not be your only line of defence. Install the pack in a heated room rather than a garage or a porch; the comfortable range is roughly 15–25 °C.
