3 kW VFD: when to take 3 kW vs the neighbouring 2.2 kW

The 3 kW size in our warehouse goes for motors with rated current 7-7.7 A (three-phase 380 V) or 11-14 A (single-phase 220 V). Typical customer this year: a farm with a screw conveyor or a wood shop with a band saw. Hold a simple rule. If your motor draws up to 6 A on the datasheet, take 2.2 kW, no reason to overpay. If the motor shows 7 A or above, or the start is heavy (massive pulley, inertial drum), 3 kW is what you need.

From models we ship: Danfoss 132F0024 (Micro Drive FC51, 7.2 A, built-in EMC filter, a baseline replacement for old VFDs in HVAC) and Schneider ATV650U30N4 (Altivar 650, IP55 enclosure, we install it in damp rooms without a cabinet). For plain three-phase without extras the alternative is Bosch Rexroth EFC 5610 (R912005732, 7.6 A). Single-phase 220 V only Delta MS300 VFD11AMS21AFSAA (11 A output), everything else is three-phase only.

What we ask before ordering: load type or IP class

First question. What is the motor load. Pump or fan: light start, 110-120% overload is enough, we ship a simple scalar model. Conveyor with product, crusher, press: heavy start, you need 150% for 60 seconds (look for the Heavy Duty / HD line in the manufacturer datasheet). If conditions are unclear or you have a compressor with frequent starts, we move you to 5.5 kW, cheaper than swapping the VFD after overheat.

Second question. Where you will mount it. A cabinet in a clean shop: basic IP20 is enough, like the Danfoss FC51. Mounted on a wall in a pump house or an open workshop with dust or condensate: we take IP55 (Altivar 650 is our pick here). Third question. Do you need Modbus. Bosch or Schneider come with RS-485 out of the box. On Danfoss FC51 Modbus is an option, the surcharge is small. Warranty: Danfoss 24 months. Schneider 24 months. Bosch or Delta 18 months. Delivery from our Kyiv warehouse takes 1-3 days.

For heavy-start mechanisms (crushers, presses, loaded conveyors) select a drive with 150% overload capacity for 60 s, or step up to a 5.5 kW unit. For pumps and fans, 110–120% overload suffices as they have light starting torque.
