Delta ASDA servo: which series we ship for CNC, and which for a packaging machine

Delta is the number-one servo brand in our sales mix in Ukraine. The reason: prices run 30-40% below Yaskawa or Mitsubishi at comparable accuracy. We mostly install three series. ASDA-A2 (the 1 kW ASD-A2-1021-M is our bestseller this year): general purpose, 17-bit encoder, analog plus pulse input, EtherCAT via add-on card. ASDA-A3: premium series, 24-bit absolute encoder, tuned for high-dynamic jobs like packaging machines that run 1500 cycles/min. ASDA-B3: budget tier for CNC and conveyors, 17 bit.

A typical customer of ours this year: a CNC milling shop installs three ASDA-A2 1 kW units on X/Y/Z with ECMA-C20807RS motors, and a chocolate-candy packaging machine takes an ASDA-A3 750 W with ECMA-CA0807RS on the rotary feed. If your budget is tight and accuracy of 0.05-0.1° is enough, we ship ASDA-B3. If the controller is Mitsubishi and an SSCNETIII/H network is already in place, take Mitsubishi MR-J5 instead of Delta.

How we size ASDA: torque, motor, cable

One: peak starting torque. We pick a motor with a rated torque tied to your average load, then add a 30% margin. Delta uses ECMA-C for classic motors and ECMA-CA for high-inertia loads. Two: cable length from drive to motor. Standard 3, 5, 10 m cables are in stock; runs above 20 m we order from Taiwan in 2-3 weeks. Three: feedback. Incremental 17-bit on A2/B3 for classic jobs; absolute 24-bit on A3 for machines that cannot lose position after a power cycle.

We keep the full Delta ASDA line in stock from 100 W to 22 kW, plus ECMA motors, cables and accessories. Delta manufacturer warranty 24 months, delivery from our Kyiv warehouse in 1-3 days. A 1 kW drive plus motor pair runs roughly 2500-3500 EUR retail. For motion control we ship them as a bundle with a Delta DVP-EH3 PLC over SSCNET, or with an EtherCAT card for open systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ASDA-A2, ASDA-B2 and ASDA-B3?

A2 is the workhorse range here: 0.1–15 kW, 20-bit encoder, several fieldbus variants, input of 1-ph 220 V, 3-ph 220 V or 3-ph 380 V. B2 is simpler and cheaper at 0.1–2 kW, with a 17-bit encoder, RS-232/485 only, 220 V only. It suits a single axis driven by a standard PLC. B3 is the newer compact generation covering 0.4–1.5 kW, with a 24-bit absolute encoder, 1-ph/3-ph 200–230 V input and a choice of EtherCAT or CANopen. Need 380 V or more than 2 kW? Then A2 is your only option.

What does the last letter in an ASD-A2 code mean: M, E, F, U or L?

It sets the control interface. That is why drives of identical power are not interchangeable, and it is the mistake we correct most often on incoming orders. M adds CANopen and E-Cam on top of RS-232/485, and it is the most common build. E is EtherCAT, for fast multi-axis lines. F is DMCNET, Delta's own bus for their motion controllers. U carries E-Cam without CANopen. L is basic RS-232/485. Settle the controller bus first. Rating second.

How do I read power and voltage from a code like ASD-A2-1021-M?

The four digits after the series encode the rating and the supply class. The leading positions give power in hundreds of watts: 0121 is 0.1 kW, 0721 is 0.7 kW, 1021 is 1 kW, 1521 is 1.5 kW, 4543 is 4.5 kW. The second-to-last digit carries the voltage class, where 2 means 220 V and 4 means 380 V. So ASD-A2-1021-M delivers 1 kW at 220 V, while ASD-A2-4543-M is 4.5 kW on three-phase 380 V. Which ECMA servo motor matches a given ASDA drive?

The pair is chosen by rated torque and shaft speed, not by kilowatts alone. Drive and motor also have to agree on voltage class and encoder type. Our ECMA motors cover 0.2–4.5 kW at 220 and 380 V, while ECM-B3 handles the compact 0.4–1.5 kW band for B3 drives, so between the two ranges almost every working ASDA build is covered. To skip that cross-check there are ready-made servo kits: 14 drive-and-motor pairs from 0.2 to 7.5 kW, with compatibility already settled by the manufacturer. Does a Delta drive need separate connectors, cables and a battery module?

It does, and missing this is the usual reason a commissioning slips by a week. The CN1 I/O connector does not ship with the drive: you take either ASD-CNSC0050 for soldering, or ASD-IF-SC5020 with spring terminals when the wiring has to go in fast. An absolute encoder needs the ASD-MDBT0100 battery holder, otherwise position is lost once power is removed. Power and encoder cables we specify separately, against the real run from cabinet to motor, because the stock lengths do not always suit the site.
