Solar panel 400 W: when we install it, and when we take 500

Customers order a 400-440 W panel for a small roof: townhouse, garage, veranda, balcony PV. The 108 half-cell format is roughly 1.13 × 1.72 m, weighing 21-23 kg (5-7 kg lighter than 500 W, which matters on soft roofing or old rafters). A typical customer this year: an apartment owner with a 4-6 m² balcony putting in 2-4 panels of 410 W with a microinverter to offset peak-tariff loads. Or a dacha with a 1.5-2.5 kW system for a well pump.

Technically this is monocrystalline PERC at 20-21% efficiency (lower than 500 W due to the smaller format). Working voltage Vmpp around 31-32 V, Voc 37-38 V. This matters: a string of 12 panels gives Voc ~456 V, already close to the 500 V ceiling on entry-level MPPTs. Our warehouse stocks Veichi VCS-108H series. We pick this series because it has half-cell and 3 bypass diodes, so partial shading does not kill the whole string.

We ask up front: why 400 W instead of 500

Three typical cases where 400 W is the right call. First: roof of 15-25 m², where 500 W does not give a clean panel count for the inverter. Second: weight. Old soft roofing or light rafters with a 22-25 kg/m² limit make 500 W marginal, 400 W comfortable. Third: balcony or veranda with size and wind-load limits (smaller panel, less wind sail).

What we check before ordering. First: is there space for the mandatory 30 cm offset from the roof edge (installer's wind-load rule). Second: mount type – metal tile uses short L-brackets, standing seam uses non-piercing clamps. Third: do you need DC pre-wiring now for a future inverter. Warranty: 12 years on materials, 25 years linear performance (84.8% after 25 years, per datasheet). We ship from Kyiv in 1-3 days. If you are torn between 400 and 500, ask us: we size your roof in 5 minutes.

400W solar panel manufacturers

Veichi is an industrial equipment manufacturer specialising in VFDs, hybrid inverters, and solar panels. The VCS series with 108 half-cells covers the 390-430 W range. Veichi panels are certified to IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 standards, feature anti-reflective coating, and offer enhanced PID degradation resistance. The operating voltage of 31-32 V allows forming strings of 8-12 panels for most hybrid inverters.

Warranty and support

All 400 W solar panels come with an official warranty: 12 years on materials and workmanship, 25 years on linear performance (at least 84.8% of rated power after 25 years). Our engineers will help calculate the number of panels and select a suitable hybrid inverter and batteries for your project. Payment by bank transfer for legal entities or by card. Delivery across Ukraine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dimensions and weight of a 400 W solar panel?

Panels in this class use 108 half-cells and measure 1722×1134×30 mm or 1762×1134×30 mm, weighing 20.5–22.5 kg. That is just under 2 m² per module, so they fit pitched roofs where a 2382×1134 mm 144-cell panel no longer clears a window or a chimney. Two people are still needed to place one safely.

How many 400 W panels make 5 kW?

Twelve modules of 420 W give 5.04 kW; at 430 W each, 5.16 kW. A 5 kW inverter is normally paired with a slightly oversized array, so real kits run 12–15 panels — check the inverter datasheet for the exact array limit. Annual yield in Ukraine is roughly 1,000–1,100 kWh per installed kilowatt, so a 5 kW array produces about 5–5.5 MWh a year.

Is a 400 W solar panel 12 V or 24 V?

Neither. A 400 W monocrystalline module runs at 31–34 V at maximum power and 37–40 V open circuit — on the LONGi LR5-54HTB-430M that is Vmp 33.16 V and Voc 39.43 V. The 12 V and 24 V labels come from small legacy modules built to charge lead-acid batteries directly, and they describe the battery rather than the panel. With an MPPT controller this panel charges a 12, 24 or 48 V bank without trouble; a PWM controller cannot step the voltage down.

How much does a 400 W solar panel cost and what drives the price?

Compare in currency per watt rather than per unit. Per watt, 400 W and 600 W modules sit in much the same corridor — brand, cell technology and efficiency (roughly 20–24% across the catalogue) move the figure more than format does. The current price of each model is on its product card, because it tracks the exchange rate and the shipment.

What will a single 400 W panel run?

One panel yields roughly 420–460 kWh a year, averaging 1.1–1.3 kWh a day — considerably more in summer, several times less in December and January. That covers a refrigerator, or lighting plus a router, but not a water heater or an electric boiler. On its own a panel is not backup power: without an inverter and a battery it only reduces daytime draw from the grid.
