A 6-axis industrial robot is a manipulator with six rotational degrees of freedom (axes J1–J6), capable of reaching any point in its working envelope at any orientation. Unlike cobots or SCARA robots, a 6-axis arm is the most versatile type: welding, painting, assembly, palletizing, and machine tending are handled by the same platform — only the end-effector changes.

1. Payload and moment. Include end-effector mass: welding torch 1.5–4 kg, spray gun 0.5–2 kg. Apply a 15–20% safety margin above maximum load.

2. Repeatability. ±0.02–0.03 mm: precision assembly (SMD placement). ±0.05–0.08 mm: welding, painting, palletizing.

What repeatability should I specify for a welding robot?

For MIG/MAG welding, ±0.05–0.08 mm is sufficient — the weld pool naturally accommodates sub-millimetre variation. For laser welding of thin parts (< 1 mm), specify ±0.02–0.03 mm. Always state the welding process type when requesting a quote.

Can one 6-axis robot handle both welding and palletizing?

Yes, with end-effector changes and reprogramming. The standard ISO 9283 tool flange enables fast swapping between a welding torch and a gripper or vacuum system. However, two dedicated robots often deliver better ROI than one flexible unit for facilities running both processes.

What is foundry proof and when is it required?
