WEG soft starters: SSW07 for heavy starts, SSW900 when you need communication

Customers take WEG for two reasons. First: a swap inside a panel that already runs Brazilian drives, where keeping the same brand makes sense. Second: a heavy start where budget Chinese units do not cope, but paying for a Danfoss MCD500 is not on the table. We stock two series. The SSW07 covers 17-412 A, the SSW900 works across 10-1400 A. That is 34 positions.

We pick the SSW07 when the start is hard and the control side is simple. It is the classic pick for crushers, for mills, for piston compressors. The series is built around high breakaway torque. The bypass is built in. That means the panel runs noticeably cooler than it would with a unit needing a separate bypass contactor bolted on and extra DIN rail space budgeted for it. Setup happens from the front keypad, no laptop needed. We pick the SSW900 when diagnostics and communication join the requirements. It carries a detachable HMI, an event log, fieldbus support, plus a full set of motor protections. That is a platform rather than just a starting device.

What we ask before quoting

Rated current from the motor nameplate. From the nameplate specifically: machine documentation often differs from reality by 5-15%. Then the load type, because a centrifugal pump and a crusher need different sizing even at the same rated power. Then starts per hour and cabinet temperature: above 40 °C you need derating. And finally, whether SCADA communication is required. If it is, the SSW07 drops out immediately.

Prices and availability

SSW07 runs from UAH 40,174 for the SSW070017T5SZ at 17 A up to UAH 207,862 for the SSW070412T5SH1Z at 412 A. The SSW900 starts at UAH 47,322 for the SSW900A0010T5E2B at 10 A, while the top SSW900G1400T5E3B at 1400 A costs UAH 1,463,465. Supply voltage for both series is 230-575 V. We send manuals and wiring diagrams for the series with the invoice, before payment. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SSW07 and SSW900?

The class of the job. The SSW07 is a starting device for hard starts: crushers, mills, piston compressors. Front keypad control, built-in bypass, 17-412 A. The SSW900 is a platform: detachable HMI, event log, fieldbus, a full set of motor protections, 10-1400 A. If SCADA communication is required, the SSW07 drops out at once. If you simply need a reliable heavy start, paying extra for the SSW900 makes no sense.

Which WEG soft starter suits a crusher or compressor?

The SSW07, and that is exactly the duty the series was designed for. It holds high breakaway torque, which budget units often fail to deliver. We size by nameplate current rather than kilowatts, plus margin for the heavy start. The catalogue holds 12 positions from 17 to 412 A. For a piston compressor we usually go one frame above the calculated size.

Where do I find the WEG SSW07 manual and wiring diagram?

We supply the series manual and wiring diagram with the invoice, before payment. Manuals also sit on our site in the per-series documentation section. If you need parameters for a specific duty (ramp time, initial voltage, protection settings), tell us the load type and we will send starting values.

Do I need a contactor and breaker ahead of the SSW07?

Yes, line-side protection is required: a breaker or fuses. A line contactor is fitted for emergency disconnect and galvanic isolation. A bypass contactor is not needed, it is built into the series. That noticeably reduces cabinet heating compared with units where the bypass sits outside.

Does a WEG soft starter replace a VFD?

No. A soft start removes the inrush and gives a soft stop. Once up to speed the motor runs straight off the mains at 50 Hz. Holding pressure with a PID loop, trimming pump output or saving energy at partial load is out of reach. That calls for a variable frequency drive.

What supply voltage do the SSW07 and SSW900 accept?

Both series are rated 230-575 V. Standard Ukrainian 380 V is covered with margin, and 400 or 440 V works without modification. That helps when the equipment goes to a site with an unstable grid, or onto an export machine running a different voltage.

How much does a WEG soft starter cost?

The SSW07 runs from UAH 40,174 for the SSW070017T5SZ at 17 A to UAH 207,862 for the SSW070412T5SH1Z at 412 A. The SSW900 opens at UAH 47,322 for the SSW900A0010T5E2B at 10 A. The top position, SSW900G1400T5E3B at 1400 A, costs UAH 1,463,465. Catalogue prices are current, please confirm availability with a manager.

Are there alternatives to WEG if the lead time does not work?

Yes, and we say so openly. For heavy starts the alternatives are the Danfoss MCD500 (92 positions in stock) or Schneider ATS48 (42 positions). For communication and diagnostics look at the Schneider ATS480 or AuCom EMX4i. We size by current and load type, so the brand is secondary unless the project specifies it.
