WEG CFW300 and CFW500 Variable Frequency Drives

WEG CFW500 variable frequency drive

WEG is best known for electric motors, but its drives are just as solid. We currently list two small and mid-power series: the compact CFW300 and the more capable CFW500. Together that is 47 models from 0.25 to 7.5 kW on 220 V and 380–480 V supplies.

CFW300 — a compact drive for simple machines

Rated output current is 1.6–15.2 A. The housing is compact and the wiring is contactor-style: supply on top, motor at the bottom, so there is less cabling in the panel. It offers V/F scalar control, WEG VVW vector control, a built-in keypad, SoftPLC and free programming software. Out of the box you get 4 digital inputs, 1 analog input (0–10 V or 4–20 mA) and 1 relay output. Everything else (RS485, Modbus-TCP, CANopen, Profibus-DP, Bluetooth, I/O expansion) comes as plug-in modules. Typical uses: packaging and mixing machines, conveyors, fans, gates and barriers, pool pumps.

CFW500 — when you need more headroom

This series offers four control modes: V/F, VVW, sensorless vector and closed-loop vector with an encoder, plus a mode for permanent-magnet synchronous motors. Plug-in modules let you pick the interface for the job. All of them include an RS485 port, and CANopen, DeviceNet, Profibus-DP, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET IO are available as options. A separate safety module adds STO and SS1 (SIL 3 / PL e). For pumping systems there is the Pump Genius software. It mounts on a DIN rail or on a surface, and side-by-side installation is allowed.

How to choose a model

Go by the motor's rated current, not only the kW on the nameplate. Then check the supply voltage: the catalogue has single-phase 220 V units for three-phase motors and three-phase 380–480 V units. The letters in the part number describe the version: NB means no built-in braking transistor, DB means it is fitted. On the CFW500 the transistor is present in almost every frame size except frame A in the IP20 version. On the CFW300 it is fitted to frame sizes B and C with the DB code. Base codes without a C2 or C3 suffix have no internal RFI filter, which matters in residential or office buildings.

Stock and price are shown on every card: some models are in stock, the rest are made to order. You can filter by series: CFW300 or CFW500. Related sections: all frequency inverters, WEG soft starters and WEG electric motors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the CFW300 and the CFW500?

The CFW300 is a compact drive for simple jobs: V/F and VVW vector control, 4 digital inputs, 1 analog input and 1 relay, with everything else added as modules. The CFW500 does more: vector control with and without an encoder, a mode for synchronous motors, a plug-in with RS485 included, an STO/SS1 safety module and Pump Genius software for pumps. If you only need start, stop and speed control, the CFW300 is enough. For networking, precise control and safety, choose the CFW500.

Do these drives have a built-in braking transistor?

It depends on the part number. On the CFW500 the transistor is fitted in almost every model except frame size A in the IP20 version, which are the NB20 codes. On the CFW300 it is fitted in frame sizes B and C with the DB20 code, and not in NB20. If the motor brakes often or has high inertia you will also need an external braking resistor. We can size one for your model.

Is an EMC filter built in?

In the models we list (codes without C2 or C3) there is no internal RFI filter. Versions with a category C2 or C3 filter are separate part numbers. For the CFW300 the filter can also be an external accessory. If the drive will sit in a residential or office building rather than a plant, check the emission requirements before ordering.

How do I connect the drive to a Modbus network or a PLC?

On the CFW500 an RS485 port with Modbus-RTU is part of every plug-in module, including the standard CFW500-IOS. For CANopen, Profibus-DP, EtherNet/IP or PROFINET IO you fit the matching plug-in. On the CFW300 communication is added with a separate module (for example the CFW300-CRS485), so the base unit has no serial interface.

Can a WEG CFW drive a pump or a fan?

Yes, both are typical applications for either series. The CFW500 has Pump Genius software with ready-made pump functions. The CFW300 also suits pumps and fans, including pool pumps. Choose by motor rated current and supply voltage, not by power alone.

How much does a WEG drive cost and how do I check stock?

Price and stock are shown on each model card and in the list above. Some part numbers are in stock and the others we bring in to order. Message or call us and we will match a model to your motor power, supply voltage and the interfaces you need, and give you lead times.
