Proximity Sensors

Proximity sensors — non-contact object detection in manufacturing

A proximity sensor detects the presence of an object without physical contact at distances from 1 mm to several meters. These sensors are used in conveyor lines, packaging machines, metalworking equipment, and warehouse logistics. By operating principle they are divided into inductive (metal only), capacitive (any material), and optical (long range, high accuracy). The Chastotnik.ua catalog features proximity sensors from Sick, Keyence, Pepperl Fuchs, Wenglor, Baumer, and IFM for tasks of varying complexity.

How to choose a proximity sensor

Key selection criteria: target material type (metal or non-metal), required sensing distance, protection class (IP67/IP68/IP69K), output signal type (NPN/PNP, analog 4–20 mA), and environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, vibration). For metal parts on conveyors, inductive models are sufficient; for plastic, glass, or liquids, capacitive or optical sensors are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an inductive proximity sensor work?

An inductive sensor generates a high-frequency electromagnetic field. When a metal object enters the sensing zone, it changes the coil inductance, triggering the output signal. Typical sensing distance is 1 to 30 mm depending on housing diameter. Works only with metals; best response is to steel.

Which proximity sensor to choose for plastic or glass parts?

For non-metallic materials, use capacitive or optical sensors. Capacitive sensors respond to changes in dielectric permittivity — suitable for plastic, glass, liquids. Optical sensors work at longer distances (up to 6 m) and with transparent materials. The choice depends on distance and mounting conditions.

What is the difference between NPN and PNP proximity sensors?

NPN (sink) connects the output to ground (0 V) when triggered. PNP (source) connects to positive supply (+24 V). PNP is the European and Ukrainian standard. Choose the type based on your PLC input compatibility — check the controller documentation before ordering.

What protection rating does a proximity sensor need?

IP67 is sufficient for most industrial environments (full dust protection + brief immersion). IP68 for underwater or constantly wet conditions. IP69K for food industry with steam jet cleaning. IP65 is adequate for dry indoor applications.

Can proximity sensors be used on high-speed conveyors?

Yes, but the critical parameter is switching frequency. Inductive sensors typically offer 500–2000 Hz, optical sensors up to 10 kHz. For conveyors running above 2 m/s, select models with 1000+ Hz frequency. Sick W series and Keyence FU series provide stable operation at high speeds.
