Braking Modules for VFDs and Servo Drives
A braking module (braking unit) is an external electronic device with an IGBT transistor that switches the braking resistor when the DC bus voltage of a variable frequency drive exceeds the threshold. The module is required when the VFD lacks a built-in brake chopper or when higher braking power is needed — typically for drives rated 30 kW and above. Applications include elevators, cranes, centrifuges, winding machines, and servo systems with frequent reversals.
How to Choose a Braking Module
When selecting an external braking module, consider: rated drive power, DC bus voltage, braking duty cycle (ED%), and compatibility with the VFD series. Below is a comparison of models available in our catalog:
| Model | Drive Power | VFD Series | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| R912001499 | up to 30 kW | Bosch Rexroth Fe/Fv | Conveyors, fans, pumps |
| R912001500 | up to 45 kW | Bosch Rexroth Fe/Fv | Cranes, elevators, centrifuges |
| R912004611 | above 45 kW | Bosch Rexroth EFC/Fe | Heavy industrial machinery |
For correct operation, the module connects to the (+) and (−) terminals of the VFD DC bus, while the braking resistor connects to the module BR+ and BR− outputs. Cable length from VFD to module should not exceed 5 m; module to resistor — up to 10 m.
