SIMATIC S7-1500: When S7-1200 No Longer Cuts It and You Move to the Bigger Controller
We recommend S7-1500 to customers whose project has outgrown the compact S7-1200 and hits three walls. First: slow scan cycle on large tag counts. Second: no native OPC UA. Third: no Safety Integrated without a separate F-CPU. Our typical buyer this year is a bottling line retrofit at a food plant (about 4 000 variables, six-axis sync via PROFINET IRT), a boiler-house rebuild needing SIL 3, and a feed-mill project. Small workshops we never put on S7-1500: too pricey, overkill.
It runs as a modular controller built on CPU 1511/1513/1515/1516/1517/1518 with a 100 Mbps PROFINET backbone. Bit-instruction time from 1 ns on CPU 1518, up to 60 000 tags/s processed. The things S7-1200 lacks: a built-in OPC UA server and client (M2M and SCADA without gateways), Safety Integrated PROFIsafe SIL 3/PLe inside the same CPU (F-variants), support for up to 128 Motion Control axes. Engineering happens in TIA Portal V16+, alongside ET 200MP remote IO over PROFINET/PROFIBUS.
S7-1500 or S7-1200: At What Project Stage the Smaller One Falls Short
If you have up to 8 expansion modules, up to 4 motion axes, and Safety is not really important, pick S7-1200: no point overpaying. We move to S7-1500 when the project needs more than 8 modules per rack, native OPC UA, an F-CPU for safety, or more than 8 synchronous axes. For replacing legacy S7-300 Siemens officially routes you straight to S7-1500: it locks in your investment for the next 10-15 years. Side-by-side comparison:
| Parameter | S7-1200 | S7-1500 |
|---|---|---|
| Bit instruction execution time | 0.08 us | from 1 ns (CPU 1518) |
| Max. modules per rack | 8 | 32 |
| OPC UA | from FW 4.4+ | built-in, full |
| Safety Integrated | no | yes (F-CPU variants) |
| Motion Control axes | up to 4 | up to 128 |
| PROFIBUS (DP Master) | via CM module | built-in (select CPUs) |
| Application | Conveyors, pumps, HVAC | Metallurgy, chemicals, energy |
Choose S7-1200 when the project needs up to 8 modules and no SIL 3 safety. Choose S7-1500 when you need high-speed processing, Safety Integrated, native OPC UA. For migrating legacy S7-300, Siemens recommends S7-1500 via TIA Portal Migration Tool.
S7-1500 expansion modules and accessories
The base CPU can be expanded with expansion modules:
- Signal modules (SM) — discrete I/O, analogue I/O, thermocouple and RTD modules.
- Communication modules (CM/CP) — PROFIBUS DP, RS232/485, Modbus TCP.
- Technology modules (TM) — high-speed counters up to 400 kHz, encoders, hardware PID controllers.
- Power supply modules (PS) — 24V DC system and 120/230V AC load supplies.
