6 kW hybrid inverter: when to choose it over a 5 kW unit

We typically install a 6 kW hybrid inverter in homes around 100-150 m². Most of our customers this year run a single-storey house with a heat pump or boiler plus an air conditioner. With 5 kW that setup sometimes won't start. The AC compressor draws a 4.5-5 kW peak on startup, then add the fridge and a well pump. 6 kW gives you breathing room.

Operation is standard hybrid. When the grid is up you draw from it; surplus from PV panels goes into the battery or back to the grid (if you have Net Metering or a green tariff). When the grid drops, the unit transfers to battery in 10-20 ms, then re-engages solar. No interruption.

First question we ask: single-phase or three-phase supply

Single-phase 220 V at home: we pick 48 V battery models. Our most-shipped units in 2024 were Veichi SISV-6.2K-H (budget, MPPT 60-450 V) and Deye SUN-6K-SG05LP1-EU (best-seller, but occasionally out of stock, check availability). Three-phase 380 V is a different lineup with a high-voltage 85-750 V battery: Veichi VHS-6K-30-H, VHT-6K-25-H. High-voltage is more expensive on the battery side, but more efficient for three-phase sites with multiple AC units.

What else we check before placing the order. First: how many panels you plan, this drives MPPT tracker count (2 or 3). Second: what battery you already have, if any; so we don't break your existing ecosystem. Two-year warranty, delivery from our Kyiv warehouse in 1-3 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many solar panels can a 6 kW hybrid inverter take?

Plan for a 6–7.8 kW array, i.e. up to 130% of the inverter rating. With 550 W panels that is 11–14 units; with 430 W panels, 14–18. The limit is set by the MPPT voltage window rather than total wattage: panels in a string are wired in series, and the combined open-circuit voltage (Voc) at −10 °C must stay below the inverter's maximum DC voltage. Oversizing the array is standard practice — it offsets losses from heat, soiling and off-perpendicular sun angles.

Is a 6 kW hybrid inverter single-phase or three-phase?

It depends on the site supply, and this is the first selection criterion. For a 220 V single-phase grid, use Deye SUN-6K-SG05LP1-EU. For a 380 V three-phase supply, use Deye SUN-6K-SG04LP3-EU or Veichi VHS-6K-30-H / VHT-6K-25-H. A single-phase inverter cannot be fitted to a three-phase supply or vice versa — without a phase match the protection will not permit grid synchronisation.

What does a 6 kW hybrid system include?

A minimum working set: the inverter, a 48 V battery (typically 5–10 kWh for 6 kW), a 6–7.8 kW panel array, mounting hardware, DC and AC protection, cable and MC4 connectors. The battery is what makes the system hybrid — without it the unit behaves like a grid-tie inverter and will not carry load during an outage.

Will a 6 kW inverter run a house during a blackout?

6 kW covers a refrigerator, lighting, a pump station, a boiler and general appliances running together. What it will not carry without calculation is high-draw resistive loads and motors with high inrush: electric hobs, water heaters, welders, and borehole pumps on direct-on-line starting. For motors, size against inrush current rather than rated power — inrush runs 3–7 times the rating.

Which battery suits a 6 kW inverter?

A low-voltage 48 V LiFePO4 pack (51.2 V nominal). Size the capacity against overnight consumption: 5 kWh covers essential loads through the night, 10 kWh supports a full household. Lead-acid batteries are a poor match for a hybrid inverter — they cannot be discharged below 50% state of charge, so usable capacity is half the nameplate figure.
