Series and payload
The main selection parameter is the mass of the part together with tooling (gripper, welding torch, vacuum beam) and the reach you need. Below are guideline figures per IRB family; exact values depend on the variant.

How to choose an ABB robot
First define the task: welding, palletizing, machine tending or packaging, which sets the robot class and reach. Then add up the full payload including the gripper and keep a 15-20% margin. Third, the working envelope: model the path so the arm reaches the farthest point without awkward wrist positions. For dirty or wet areas, confirm the protection class and variant (foundry, wash-down).
