Emotron Variable Frequency Drives

Emotron FDU variable frequency drive

Emotron drives are built by CG Drives & Automation in Helsingborg, Sweden. We list four current series: the compact IP20 DSV15 and DSV35, and the wall-mounted FDU 2.1 and VFX 2.1 up to 160 kW. There is almost no public Ukrainian stock for this brand, so these drives are supplied to order and we confirm price and lead time per part number on request.

DSV15 and DSV35: compact drives for a panel

The DSV15 runs off a single-phase 230 V supply and feeds the motor with three-phase 220 V, covering 0.25–2.2 kW. The DSV35 takes a three-phase 380–480 V supply and covers 0.37–22 kW in heavy duty (up to 30 kW in normal duty). Both are IP20, so they belong inside a cabinet.

Per brochure 01-6214-01 both series include as standard what usually costs extra in this class:

  • built-in EMC filter;
  • built-in braking transistor;
  • closed-loop vector control with an encoder, not only sensorless;
  • PID controller and output frequency up to 599 Hz;
  • 5 digital inputs, 2 analog inputs, 1 analog output, 1 relay.

The keypad is optional here. Fieldbus interfaces (Modbus RTU, Modbus/TCP, CANopen, Profibus, EtherCAT) are modules too, so the base unit has none.

FDU 2.1 and VFX 2.1: wall-mounted, up to 160 kW

One platform, two firmware variants for different jobs. The FDU handles variable torque on pumps and fans and has pump cascade control for up to seven pumps. The VFX is built for constant torque and dynamics with direct torque control: cranes, extruders, mills.

Class 48 in the type code means a 230–480 V supply. The -54 version is IP54 for wall mounting without a cabinet, -20 is IP20 for panel mounting, and the two have different current ladders. Ratings run 0.55–160 kW in heavy duty (150 % overload for 60 s), and the catalogue figures are at 40 °C ambient.

A category C3 EMC filter is standard, the extended C2 is a separate position in the code, and the braking chopper is an option. An RS485 port is on board, while Profibus, Modbus/TCP, EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, CANopen and DeviceNet come as a board in the option slot. Safe stop is available from frame step 090 upwards.

Why "026" in the part number is not 26 kW

The third group of digits in an Emotron code is current, not power. Take FDU48-026-54: 48 is the 230–480 V supply class, 026 is 26 A rated normal-duty current (11 kW ND or 7.5 kW HD at 400 V), and 54 is IP54. Read that number as kW and you order a drive about one and a half steps too large. In the DSV codes the letter P is the decimal point of the current: DSV35-40-7P2-20 is 7.3 A in the rating table.

The full factory code has 19 positions covering keypad, filter, chopper, option boards, protocol and approvals. We keep the short four-position form in the catalogue because enumerating every combination is impossible. The rest is configured for your project at order time.

What we ask before ordering

Three things. The motor rated current from the nameplate, not the kW. The duty: HD with 150 % overload for 60 s for cranes and extruders, ND with 120 % for pumps and fans. And the supply voltage: single-phase 230 V for the DSV15, three-phase 380–480 V for the other three series. For IP54 units we also ask where the drive will sit, since they mount straight on a wall and need no cabinet.

Stock and price are shown on a model card where they are confirmed; for the remaining part numbers we answer on request. Related sections: all frequency inverters, VFDs for pumps, VFDs for fans, vector control VFDs. If Emotron lead times do not work for you, look at the European alternatives: Danfoss, ABB, WEG.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the FDU and the VFX?

The hardware platform is the same; the firmware and the intended duty differ. The FDU 2.1 is for variable torque: pumps, fans, blowers, with cascade control for up to seven pumps. The VFX 2.1 holds constant torque and adds direct torque control, which is why it goes on cranes, extruders, crushers and mills. The current ladders nearly match, except the IP20 range of the VFX has an extra step, VFX48-060-20, that the FDU does not have.

What do the digits in a part number such as FDU48-026-54 mean?

48 is the supply class, 230–480 V. 026 is the rated normal-duty current of 26 A, not the power: at 400 V that is 11 kW ND or 7.5 kW HD. 54 is the IP54 enclosure. The full factory code has 19 positions and goes on to describe the keypad, EMC filter, braking chopper, option boards and communication protocol. We keep the short four-position form in the catalogue and agree the rest at order time.

What is the difference between the -54 and -20 versions?

-54 means IP54: the drive mounts straight on a wall and needs no cabinet. -20 means IP20 for installation inside a panel. It is not only the enclosure, though: the IP54 and IP20 ranges have different current steps, so there is no one-to-one "same current, two enclosures" pair in the catalogue. IP54 starts at step 003, IP20 at 025.

Is an EMC filter or a braking chopper built in?

On the FDU and VFX a category C3 EMC filter is standard, the extended C2 is a separate position in the code, and the braking chopper is an option. The DSV15 and DSV35 are the other way round: brochure 01-6214-01 lists both the filter and the braking transistor as built in. If the motor brakes often or drives a high inertia load, the chopper still needs an external braking resistor, and we can size one for your model.

Which Emotron should I choose for a pump or a fan?

The FDU 2.1 is made for exactly that: variable torque, pump functions and cascade control for up to seven pumps. Size it by motor rated current in normal duty with 120 % overload for 60 s. If the rating is up to 22 kW and you have a cabinet, the DSV35 with its on-board PID controller is the cheaper route.

How does the DSV15 differ from the DSV35?

Supply and range. The DSV15 runs on a single-phase 230 V supply and gives three-phase 220 V to the motor, 0.25–2.2 kW. The DSV35 takes three-phase 380–480 V and covers 0.37–22 kW in heavy duty. Functionally the two are the same: identical frame sizes, built-in filter, built-in chopper and closed-loop vector control.

Which communication protocols do these drives support?

The FDU and VFX have RS485 on board, while DeviceNet, Profibus, Modbus/TCP, EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and CANopen are added as a board in the option slot (position 15 of the factory code). On the DSV15 and DSV35 every interface, Modbus RTU included, is a module, so the base unit has no fieldbus. Tell us which bus you run and we will put the right module in the quote.

How much does an Emotron drive cost and what are the lead times?

There is virtually no public Emotron stock in Ukraine, so price and lead time depend on the part number and the configuration: keypad, filter, chopper, communication board. Where a price is confirmed it is shown on the model card. For the rest, message or call us and we will size the drive to your motor and duty and give you a realistic lead time. If the schedule is tight we will offer a Danfoss, ABB or WEG equivalent from stock.
