Siemens PLC: which line we pick for your project
Our Siemens lineup is three live lines plus a legacy one. LOGO 8 for small automation (up to 24 I/O, no PID, no TIA Portal). S7-1200 for mid-range projects (TIA Portal, built-in Profinet, 14-30 points per CPU plus modules). S7-1500 for serious DCS/SCADA jobs (10-20x faster than S7-300, F-variants for SIL2/SIL3 without a dedicated safety controller). Separately, S7-300 sits in Legacy status: we stock it for swap-in replacements in installed systems.
Customers typically come to us with one of three jobs. First: a small cabinet for a borehole, gate, greenhouse. We ship LOGO 8 (budget pick, program written in a couple of hours with LOGO! Soft Comfort). Second: a new mid-range project (conveyor, pump house, boiler room with SCADA). We ship S7-1200 on TIA Portal. Third: replacing a failed CPU on an old STEP 7 Classic line. Only S7-300 here, we ask for the exact 6ES7 code. What we ask before quoting: I/O count, do you need Profinet, are there F (safety) requirements, and the engineering tool environment (TIA or STEP 7 V5.x).
LOGO 8 vs S7-1200: where the line is
Very rough rule. Up to 24 I/O without PID we ship LOGO 8 (one of our most-shipped base units is 6ED1052-1CC08-0BA0, LOGO 8 Basic with a display). For 30+ I/O, Profinet, SCADA, recipes, multiple servo axes, we move to S7-1200 (e.g. CPU 1211C as the entry, scaling up by load). For high-stakes projects (chemicals, power, pharma) with Safety requirements we ship S7-1500F only.
What else matters. For LOGO we stock both Basic (with display) and Pure (headless, 25% cheaper). For S7-1200 the common CPU 1211C/1212C/1214C are always on the shelf, rarer variants come on order. For S7-300 and S7-1500 some SKUs are EU-order with 7-14 day lead time. Siemens factory warranty 24 months. Nova Poshta delivery from our Kyiv warehouse in 1-3 days. LOGO 8 suits small tasks with up to 8 DI channels. It is programmed via LOGO! Soft Comfort and supports a web server for remote monitoring. S7-1200 runs in the TIA Portal environment, features built-in Ethernet, and suits systems with dozens of I/O points. S7-300 is a modular platform for large-scale projects requiring RS485, Profibus, and hundreds of channels through expansion modules.
