Motortronics soft starter: when to ship the American brand vs ABB or Schneider
Customers buy Motortronics from us either because they already standardized on this brand at the site, or because they need the PFE series with built-in power-factor correction, which Schneider and Siemens don't package the same way. Most often this year it's a plant chief electrician with compressor rooms where reactive-power penalties on the bill outweigh the savings of a cheaper soft starter.
We stock three series: Agility (compact, standard starts), SYNERGY (mid-to-heavy duty with adaptive torque and Profibus/Ethernet), and PFE (soft start plus a power-factor capacitor bank in one cabinet). For a basic pump or fan without cos φ requirements, honestly, ABB PSE or Schneider ATS22 comes out cheaper for the same job. We ship Motortronics when the customer values the American service centre in Ukraine and the 24-month warranty with local support.
Which series we ship for which motor
Agility goes on motors 7.5-90 kW with standard starts: centrifugal pump at a water utility, axial fan in a ventilation unit, conveyor in warehouse logistics. Modbus RTU out of the box, LCD with a simple menu, even an installer without an engineer can commission it in 10 minutes.
SYNERGY is what we ship when the application is heavy with adaptive start: crusher, screw compressor, ball mill. Adaptive torque control levels the ramp under real load, built-in bypass cuts heat, Profibus DP and Ethernet/IP for integration into existing SCADA. One caveat: ask us about the datasheet up front for SYNERGY, since some variants ship to order (5-15 days).
PFE is for sites on a tariff that bills reactive energy or already gets penalty fees. The internal capacitor bank lifts cos φ to 0.95-0.98, so the cabinet pays for itself in 1-2 years through penalty savings. Before purchase we ask the customer for the last 3 months of reactive-power line items on their utility invoice; without an existing penalty, the PFE premium is not worth it.
What we ask before the order and lead times
We ask for the nameplate motor power, the load type, panel temperature, starts per hour, and the SCADA you run (to confirm the protocol). 24-month manufacturer warranty, Motortronics service centre in Ukraine (Kyiv). For Agility and base SYNERGY we ship from our Kyiv warehouse in 1-3 days; PFE and exotic SYNERGY variants are made to order, lead time 7-15 days. Datasheet for any SKU is available before payment.
