Battery for an inverter: when 5 kWh is enough, when you need 10+

We size batteries on two numbers, not on the catalog: peak load and required autonomy hours. Our typical customer this year: a 60-80 m² apartment that wants to ride through evening blackouts. We ship 5 kWh. A 100-150 m² house with a heat pump plus a boiler plus AC needs at least 10 kWh, more often 15. Commercial sites (a 20-seat office, a server room, a retail unit with refrigeration) get 15-25 kWh or two cascaded modules.

The flow is simple. The hybrid inverter pulls energy from the grid, from solar panels, or from the battery. The priority is configurable. Grid drops out: 10-20 ms switchover to battery, the house keeps running with no break. Sun is on: it covers the load first, the excess goes into the battery. LiFePO4 in our shop is guaranteed for 6000+ full discharge cycles. Real service life 15-20 years on daily cycling.

What we ask before you order a battery

First and most important: which inverter do you have. Because the battery BMS must talk to the inverter over CAN or RS485. Felicity LPBA is certified with most popular hybrid brands. Veichi VCLB pairs cleanly with Veichi and Deye inverters. Rosen in rack or wall format works with Deye, Veichi, Sorotec. If you are still picking the inverter, tell us the brand and we will recommend the matching battery.

Second: where it sits. Heated utility room, hallway, heated garage – any model from our shelf. Unheated container or outdoor box – only models with built-in cell heating. Otherwise winter charge will fall to 20-30%. Third: future plan. Felicity LPBA and LPBF support up to 16 modules in parallel. Rosen rack adds another unit in 30 minutes of mounting. For an apartment, a 5 kWh battery is sufficient — providing 4 to 6 hours of runtime for a refrigerator, lighting, and router. For a house with electric heating or air conditioning, we recommend 10 kWh or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

A 200 amp battery for an inverter: how many kWh is that?

It depends on pack voltage. 200 Ah at 51.2 V gives 10.24 kWh, while the same 200 Ah at 12 V gives only 2.4 kWh, four times less. Amp-hours quoted without voltage therefore say nothing about stored energy. Our packs are built at 51.2 V, the very input an inverter datasheet labels 48 V.

How long will a battery last through an inverter?

Divide usable capacity by load power. A 5.12 kWh pack holds around 4 kWh of usable energy: LiFePO4 is discharged to 80–90% depth, and a few percent more goes to inverter losses. Overnight load in a house without electric heating sits around 300–400 W, so that pack covers about ten hours. A kettle or water heater changes the picture completely: 2 kW consumes the same reserve in two hours.

High-voltage or low-voltage battery: which one for an inverter?

The inverter decides this, not the buyer. Low-voltage models have a battery input rated for 48 V, meaning a 51.2 V pack, and those are the batteries we stock. High-voltage inverters run strings of several hundred volts, and a low-voltage pack will not connect to them at all. Check the inverter datasheet: it states the permitted battery voltage range.

What capacity does a 5, 6 or 10 kW inverter need?

Inverter kilowatts and battery kilowatt-hours answer different questions: how much equipment runs at once, and for how long. In practice 5–6 kW inverters are paired with 5–10 kWh, 8–12 kW with 10–15 kWh, and a house with electric heating starts at 15 kWh. There is a lower limit too. The pack must accept the charge current the inverter delivers, so an undersized module is never fitted to a powerful inverter.

Can a car or gel battery be connected to an inverter?

A starter car battery will not do: it lives on short cranking discharges and degrades within months of daily deep cycling. Gel and AGM technically work, but they must not be discharged below about half capacity, so usable energy comes out at half the nameplate figure. Then there is voltage. A 12 V battery reaches a 48 V input only as a series string of four, with all the imbalance risk that carries; a 51.2 V module connects directly.
