Mitsubishi FR-D, FR-E, FR-A: a Japanese top-tier we ship regularly

Mitsubishi is steadily our second or third brand by volume among premium Japanese and European drives. Over the past 12 months the bestseller is FR-D740-036SC-EC at 1.5 kW (13 units shipped). Customers mostly use it to replace old Soviet-era drives on machine tools and small process equipment. The single-phase FR-D720S moves much slower: a typical year is 5-7 units.

Four FR series cover the full range. FR-D up to 7.5 kW (compact, machine tools). FR-E up to 15 kW (general purpose with sensorless vector). FR-A up to 55 kW (Real Sensorless Vector plus CC-Link, for cranes). FR-F up to 315 kW (pumps and fans at high power). One caveat: spare parts for legacy FR-A540 and FR-E520 are end-of-life. If you are repairing one, ask us — sometimes we source B-stock from decommissioned panels.

Mitsubishi Electric FR VFD Series

Main Mitsubishi Frequency Inverter Series

FR-D — Compact General-Purpose Series

9 models, 0.75–7.5 kW. Compact drive for small tasks: machine tools, conveyors, and small mechanisation. Easy installation and commissioning.

FR-E — General-Purpose Series for Medium Power

11 models, 0.75–15 kW. Sensorless vector control, Modbus RTU. General industrial applications: pumps, fans, and conveyors up to 15 kW.

FR-A — High-Performance Series with Advanced Functions

14 models, 0.75–55 kW. Real Sensorless Vector Control, Encoder Feedback, CC-Link. For cranes, lifts, and complex production equipment.

FR-F — High-Power Pump and Fan Series

55 models, 0.75–315 kW. Specialised for pump and fan applications: automatic energy saving, built-in PID, pump cascade control, and Ethernet. The largest series in the catalogue by model count.

Which Mitsubishi FR Series to Choose?

Machine tool or small conveyor up to 7.5 kW — FR-D. Pump or fan up to 15 kW — FR-E. Crane or complex production equipment up to 55 kW — FR-A. Pumping station or ventilation system up to 315 kW — FR-F.

Equipment Advantages

When selecting equipment, consider overload capacity, integrated EMC filtering, and industrial protocol support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which frequency inverter converts 380 to 220 V?

The question hides a trap. A drive with a single-phase 220 V input feeds the motor 3×220 V, not 380. We keep six such Mitsubishi units: FR-D720S and FR-E720S at 0.75, 1.5 and 2.2 kW. A 380 V three-phase motor will run from them if its nameplate shows the 380/220 V Y/Δ pair: you move the links in the terminal box to delta and the windings get their 220 V. Rated torque stays, current is 1.7 times higher. Motors from 4 kW up are usually wound for 380/660 V, and there this trick no longer works.

Who manufactures Mitsubishi?

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Tokyo. Their drive range carries the FREQROL trade name, which is where the FR prefix in model numbers comes from. The European -EC versions we stock come through Mitsubishi Electric Europe. We hold 134 models, priced from UAH 14,400 with VAT. Official warranty is 24 months from the date of purchase.

What is a frequency inverter?

A power device sitting between the mains and the motor. Inside there is a rectifier first, then a DC capacitor link, then an IGBT output stage that builds the required sine wave by PWM out of the fixed 50 Hz supply. The point is simple. The motor runs at the speed you set instead of its single nameplate speed. At Mitsubishi that job belongs to the FR family, from FR-D at 0.75 kW up to FR-F at 315 kW.

How does a frequency inverter work?

Three stages. The rectifier turns mains AC into DC, the DC link smooths it with capacitors, and the IGBT output stage chops it back into three-phase AC at the frequency you want. The drive holds the U/f ratio itself so that motor flux stays within limits. In FR-D and FR-E this is scalar plus sensorless vector control. FR-A adds Real Sensorless Vector with 150% overload for 60 seconds, which is why it goes onto cranes.

How do I set up a frequency inverter?

On Mitsubishi the order is this. Motor nameplate data and thermal protection current first, then acceleration and deceleration times, and only after that Pr. 79: control from the keypad, from terminals or over Modbus. Terminal functions live in Pr. 180-186, where STF is forward run, STR is reverse and RL/RM/RH are preset speeds. A full FR-D700 and FR-E700 walkthrough sits as a separate guide in our instructions section. For a specific model, write to us; our engineers are at the Kyiv warehouse.

What are frequency inverters used for?

Three reasons. Energy saving on pumps and fans, where flow is trimmed by speed rather than by a damper. A soft start with no inrush current, so the breaker stays in and the belt survives. And process control: a conveyor at a set speed, a crane without a jolt, a machine tool at the spindle rpm you need. Our Mitsubishi buyers mostly replace old drives on machine tools. FR-F goes into pumping stations.
