Mitsubishi FR-D720 alternative: INVT GD20 vs Veichi AC10 — spec table and real price

Why engineers ask this

Mitsubishi FR-D720-008SC-EC is a compact 0.4 kW VFD on single-phase 220 V supply. In our shop it is a workhorse for retrofitting Soviet-era machine tools, small belt conveyors, WILO-Star RS25-class well pumps, and small woodworking planers. Over 24 months we shipped 13 units of the bestseller FR-D740-036SC-EC (three-phase 1.5 kW), average ticket UAH 17,800.

Typical customer call: «My imported single-phase 0.4 kW on the lathe died, what do I put in?» Real choice in May 2026:

  • Mitsubishi FR-D720S-008SC-EC — UAH 8,034
  • INVT GD20-0R7G-S2 — UAH 6,099
  • Veichi AC10-T/S2-R75G-B-VC — UAH 6,141

25-30% gap in favor of the budget alternative. Customer asks: «What do I lose if I take the Chinese one?» This is an honest answer article.

Where INVT GD20 beats Mitsubishi

Standard Modbus RTU. Mitsubishi runs its own FR protocol; you connect to third-party SCADA via a converter or a GOT panel. INVT/Veichi speak standard Modbus RTU out of the box — any Owen-SPK, Weintek, Delta DOP pulls parameters without ceremony.

More parameters in free software. INVT Workshop and Veichi VfdSoft have English + Russian UI, free, run on Windows 10/11. FR-Configurator2 is English-only, install is finicky, runs reliably on Windows 7-8, and needs the Mitsubishi USB-Serial driver.

Russian-language manuals on Veichi. Veichi publishes Russian translations for 95% of series. Mitsubishi ships only EN and DE, sometimes JP. For an installer without English, this affects commissioning time.

Where Mitsubishi beats budget alternatives

Stability under continuous operation. Our service desk sees INVT/Veichi return rate 4-5× higher than Mitsubishi. Typical numbers: per 100 Mitsubishi FR-D700 sold over 5 years, 2-3 come back. Per 100 INVT GD20, 8-12 come back, mostly capacitor failures after overloads. Not catastrophic, but on a 24/7 critical process the gap hurts.

Magnetic flux vector in V/f mode. Mitsubishi implements magnetic flux vector even in the budget D700 — this gives better low-speed torque on motors with unknown parameters. INVT/Veichi offer sensorless vector but you must run autotune (Pn003=1) with the load disconnected. On a milling spindle that must start under load from low RPM without torque loss, Mitsubishi works out of the box.

Parameter predictability. Between Mitsubishi FR-D720 subversions (pre-2018 and post-2018) parameters are compatible. INVT GD20 v1.x vs v2.x has noticeable differences in Modbus register addresses and digital input assignment. If you deploy 5 identical drives on a conveyor and program via Modbus — Mitsubishi gives you 1-to-1 compatibility.

Service in Ukraine. Mitsubishi has an official distributor with warranty and post-warranty service. INVT/Veichi service goes through importers (us included), spare parts on order 7-14 days.

When to take Mitsubishi, when to take an alternative

Take Mitsubishi:

  • Project spec literally says «Mitsubishi or equivalent»
  • Equipment runs 24/7 on a critical process (food production, non-stop line)
  • Replacing an old FR-D700/FR-S500 (drop-in, no reprogramming)
  • Integration with MELSEC PLC + GOT panel — single ecosystem
  • You hold a 5-10 year service commitment to your customer

Take INVT/Veichi:

  • Budget pressure 30-40%
  • Equipment runs 8-16 h/day, off on weekends
  • Integration via standard Modbus RTU with third-party SCADA
  • Installer needs native Russian manual
  • Small production where 1-2 day downtime is acceptable

Common integration questions

Can I put Mitsubishi FR-D720 and INVT GD20 on one Modbus? Yes, via a gateway or one SCADA that knows both dialects. Direct on one Modbus master without a gateway will not work — Mitsubishi has its own register format and function codes. Most SCADA platforms (Weintek, Owen, ifak) have drivers for both.

Can I run Mitsubishi from a GOT panel manually and edit parameters through the inverter keypad? Yes, the GOT panel does not block keypad access. Convenient for diagnostics.

Does INVT GD20 work for a well pump with frequent pressure swings? Yes, but without built-in PID — you need an external controller. The GD200 and AC310 series have PID built in. For pressure-controlled pumps, take GD200 or Veichi AC310 directly.

Summary

Mitsubishi FR-D720 on the 2026 market is a premium VFD priced 25-30% above the Chinese alternative. For that markup you pay for:

  • stability under long-term operation
  • magnetic flux vector out of the box
  • predictable Modbus addresses across versions
  • 24-month service support

If your application is critical — Mitsubishi is justified. If not — INVT GD20 or Veichi AC10 cover 90% of tasks for less money. We stock both on the site.
