Delta VFD110ED43S is an 11 kW (15 HP) elevator inverter from the VFD-ED series with three-phase 380–480 V supply (3×380 input, three-phase output to the motor). Rated output current is 23 A.

Delta VFD-ED — a dedicated elevator inverter with closed-loop control

The VFD-ED is not a general-purpose drive but an inverter Delta built specifically for elevators and hoisting machinery. The line continues the experience of the VFD-VL series (Delta's first elevator drive launched back in 2007) and is built around three things that matter in a lift: precise torque control, ride smoothness and safety. How an elevator drive differs from an ordinary inverter

The key feature of the VFD-ED is full closed-loop vector control with encoder feedback (FOC+PG), plus a torque-control mode (TQC+PG). In practice the drive holds torque from zero speed — the car starts without a jerk and without sag when the brake opens. The series works with both asynchronous motors and permanent-magnet synchronous motors (FOC+PM) — and PM gearless machines are exactly what most modern lifts use today. The manufacturer lists six modes in total: V/F, VF+PG, SVC, FOC+PG, TQC+PG and FOC+PM.

The drive supports several encoder types — ABZ, ABZ+UVW, SIN/COS and SIN/COS+EnDat2.1 — so it interfaces with both standard incremental encoders and the absolute encoders of synchronous machines. Auto-tuning with the motor connected noticeably shortens commissioning.

Safety and integration into the control panel

VFD-ED is built around elevator safety: the manufacturer states the Safe Torque Off function complies with EN 61800-5-2 (STO) and SIL2 per EN 61508, and supports single output-contactor operation. For communication with the control system there is a built-in CAN/Modbus interface, 8 programmable digital inputs and 6 programmable outputs — enough for floor signals, the brake, contactors and feedback. According to the manufacturer the drive includes a built-in brake chopper for this class — to dissipate braking energy you only need to connect a braking resistor.

When to choose VFD-ED versus a general-purpose drive

VFD-ED makes sense where you need genuine elevator behaviour: start with torque holding, smooth S-curve ramps, sequenced brake control, PM-machine operation via an absolute encoder. For conveyors, pumps, fans and machine tools an elevator drive is overkill — a general-purpose inverter is the logical choice there.
