Omron MX2 (3G3MX2) — compact drive with vector control, built-in logic and a standard brake chopper

The MX2 is Omron's multifunction compact inverter, marketed as "born to drive machines" — meaning it is built for machinery where you need to control the shaft intelligently, not just spin it. In our range these are models from 0.7 to 18.5 kW in two input versions: single-phase 220 V (three-phase 220 V output to the motor) and three-phase 380 V. It is a competitor/European brand we supply and service — and we are honest about where it fits and where our Veichi is the smarter buy.

What the MX2 actually does

• Two control modes: V/f and open-loop (sensorless) vector. The maker states 200% starting torque already at 0.5 Hz — enough for conveyors, mixers and extruders that start under load.
• Double rating: heavy duty CT 150%/1 min and normal duty VT 120%/1 min. One part number covers both pump/fan and machine-tool duty — it is just a matter of sizing it correctly for the torque.
• Built-in logic (Drive Programming / EzSQL): the drive embeds a mini programmable logic. Simple sequences, counters and start conditions can often be done without an external PLC. Confirm the depth for a specific configuration with us.
• Communication: built-in Modbus RTU over RS-485. Optional fieldbus boards: EtherCAT, PROFIBUS, DeviceNet, CompoNet, MECHATROLINK. In our packet the fieldbuses are an option, not standard.

Braking: the chopper is built into the whole range

This is a key MX2 selling point. Unlike many competitors where the braking transistor only appears below a certain power, the MX2 has the regenerative braking circuit (BRD) built in as standard across the whole series — from the smallest unit up to 15…18.5 kW. In practice that means you only add a braking resistor, not an external braking unit. An external regenerative unit is needed only when braking torque or energy is genuinely high (frequent reversals, large inertia) — that is decided by calculation, not by frame size.

Where the MX2 fits, and where to look at Veichi

The MX2 is a good pick when you need built-in logic, accurate low-speed torque and PM-motor capability.
