Allen Bradley PowerFlex 40 22BD024N104 is the most powerful AC drive in this lineup, rated 11 kW with three-phase 380V (480V class) input and a rated current of 24 A. It is intended for large pump stations, ventilation systems and heavier production machines. It supports V/Hz and sensorless vector with autotune; output frequency up to 400 Hz, overload 150% for 60 s. Even at the top frame the brake transistor remains built in — braking inertial masses needs only an external resistor of adequate wattage. PowerFlex 40 (catalog family 22B) is a compact AC drive from Rockwell Automation covering 0.7–11 kW. It is a workhorse on American machinery lines: where the control system already runs on ControlLogix or CompactLogix, PowerFlex 40 fits in natively thanks to the DSI interface and optional EtherNet/IP. Our range includes two supply classes: single-phase 240V input with a 3~220V motor output, and three-phase 380/480V.

Control and what matters in practice

The series runs in two modes: V/Hz and sensorless (open-loop) vector with autotune. This is a compact drive — there is no encoder feedback, so for positioning or holding full torque at zero speed look at higher series. But for pumps, fans, conveyors and simple machine tools, sensorless vector gives smooth speed regulation and solid starting torque. Maximum output frequency is up to 400 Hz, with overload of 150% for 60 s (and 200% for 3 s).

Key feature — built-in brake transistor

A handy PowerFlex 40 feature engineers value: the brake transistor (brake chopper) is integral on all ratings. In practice that means you do not need a separate braking module for dynamic braking — just connect a low-cost external brake resistor. For centrifuges, winders and high-inertia drives this saves both cabinet space and money.

Communications and integration

Every drive has a built-in RS-485 port supporting DSI / Modbus RTU. Add-on adapter modules provide EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet, PROFIBUS-DP and LonWorks — which is exactly why the series is popular on integrated Rockwell lines. The enclosure is IP20 (NEMA Open Type); an optional NEMA Type 1 kit is available for out-of-cabinet mounting.

An honest word on selection

PowerFlex 40 is a previous-generation series (succeeded by PowerFlex 525), so it is most often bought as a like-for-like replacement on an existing line to avoid rewriting PLC code.
