Allen Bradley PowerFlex 700 — 7-Class vector AC drive for Rockwell-based systems

The PowerFlex 700 (catalog 20B) is a mid-to-high performance general-purpose drive from Rockwell Automation. Unlike the compact PowerFlex 4/40, it offers full vector control with Force Technology — Allen-Bradley's patented algorithm that holds torque at low and zero speed as well as far pricier drives. The strength of the series is not price but control quality plus deep Rockwell integration: DPI networks, ControlNet/EtherNet/IP, ControlLogix controllers. If your plant already runs this hardware, or you are replacing an installed 700, the series fits in cleanly.

Our catalog covers models from 0.7 to 45 kW, all three-phase 380V input and output, IP20. This is part of the full 20B range (up to 200 HP per the manufacturer).

Three control modes for different jobs

• V/Hz — simple fans and pumps with variable torque.
• Sensorless vector — high starting torque across a wide speed range without a sensor.
• Vector with Force Technology — precise torque and low-speed control; with the optional encoder, speed regulation reaches 0.001% and torque holds down to zero speed.

Braking: built-in brake IGBT

This is a feature engineers value. Per the manufacturer's manual, the built-in dynamic brake transistor (IGBT) is standard on Frames 0-3 — which is our entire 0.7 to 37 kW range. So to stop an inertial load you do not need an external brake module; just connect a resistor. On the 45 kW model (Frame 4) the brake IGBT is an option, so verify the catalog code there. The built-in brake resistor is fitted only up to roughly 18.5 kW; above that the resistor is external.

Communications and supply

The PowerFlex 700 works with DPI adapters: EtherNet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Modbus RTU, PROFIBUS, RS-485. The network module is an option for the specific network. Efficiency at rated amps is 97.5%, overload 150% for 3 s, output frequency up to 420 Hz in vector mode.

Honestly: the PowerFlex 700 is a legacy series, succeeded by the PowerFlex 753/755. If you are building a new line from scratch and are not tied to Rockwell, look at our Veichi AC310 (vector) or AC10 — similar duty, lower price, stock and support in Ukraine. For replacing an installed 700 inside an Allen-Bradley system, this series remains the logical choice.
