Danfoss iC2 — a compact drive for everyday jobs

The iC2 (factory name iC2-Micro) is the successor to the old VLT Micro Drive FC51. If you need a dependable drive for a pump, fan, conveyor or small machine in the 0.7–22 kW range without extra frills, this is it. We fit the iC2 where the customer does not need the fieldbus options and redundancy of an FC302, but still wants Danfoss-grade lifetime and a smooth start.

What the iC2 is good for

• Pumps and boosting (0.7–7.5 kW): boreholes, circulation, drainage. The built-in PID holds pressure without a separate controller.
• Ventilation (1.5–11 kW): supply units, exhaust, dust extraction. Scalar mode, quiet running at low speed.
• Conveyors and simple machinery (3–22 kW): belts, mixers, feeders. 150% overload covers a loaded start.

What we have learned in the field

iC2 boards ship with conformal coating against corrosive gases (IEC 60721-3-3) as standard — in damp pump rooms and on livestock farms this removes about half the failures we used to see on the FC51. The drive runs at 50 °C with no derating, so a tight cabinet without air conditioning is fine. It drives both induction and PM motors (IPM/SPM), which is rare in this class. Modbus RTU, a brake chopper and a potentiometer are already built in, so there is nothing extra to buy.

On lifetime and board protection the iC2 beats all three. If budget is tight and the job is simple, an AC10 or GD10 costs less — but on corrosive sites we still recommend the iC2.

When the iC2 is NOT the right choice

• You need PROFIBUS, BACnet or EtherNet/IP — see the larger VLT FC202/FC301/FC302 series.
• Dynamic positioning, axis synchronisation, full torque at zero speed — that is FC302 territory.
• Power above 22 kW — the iC2 simply does not go there; choose an FC301 or FC302.

Our experience with the iC2

The iC2 quickly became our workhorse among compact Danfoss drives — most go to low-power pumps and ventilation. The sizing question is almost always the same: single-phase or three-phase input.
