Siemens SINAMICS V20 — Siemens' simple workhorse for basic drive tasks

The V20 is Siemens' basic, compact inverter. Its point is not maximum features but fast commissioning and reliable operation where complex automation is not needed: pumps, fans, conveyors, compressors, simple machines. If you expected something at G120 level with modules and PROFINET, the V20 is deliberately simpler and cheaper — and for typical drives that is exactly its advantage.

What to know about control

The V20 is a drive without closed-loop encoder vector control. Siemens implements V/f control here (linear, quadratic, multi-point) plus an FCC (Flux Current Control) mode — flux current compensation that improves low-speed torque compared with plain V/f. There is no encoder feedback and no full PLC inside — this is a basic converter, not a controller. For communication it has a built-in RS485 (USS / Modbus RTU) interface; PROFINET/PROFIBUS belong to other Siemens families.

Two supply lines

This list contains two execution groups:

• 1-phase 220 V (article numbers 6SL3210-5BB…) — single-phase 1×220 V input, three-phase 3×220 V output to the motor. Ratings here are 0.7 / 1.5 / 2.2 / 3.0 kW. Convenient for a domestic supply and small machines.
• 3-phase 380 V (article numbers 6SL3210-5BE…) — three-phase 3×380 V input and output. The range in this list is 0.7 to 15 kW.

The letter B or E in the fifth position of the article number tells you the supply at a glance: BB = 1×220 V, BE = 3×380 V. This is the most common ordering mistake — match the article number to your mains.

Braking

The V20 supports dynamic braking via a resistor, but whether a braking chopper is built in depends on the frame size and execution version. Historically the larger frame sizes (FSD/FSE) had a built-in chopper while the smaller ones (FSAA–FSC) used an external Braking Module; Siemens later added an integrated chopper to some of the smaller frames as well. So we do not state this rigidly per article number — if your job involves active braking (high inertia, frequent stops, lowering loads), confirm the exact article and the need for a resistor/module with us.

Execution-dependent parameters

We do not quote a single built-in EMC filter, IP rating or exact maximum output frequency for the whole series: the V20 comes in filtered and unfiltered versions, with a standard panel-mount enclosure. If these parameters are critical to your project, ask us — we will check against the specific 6SL3210-… part.

When the V20 fits — and when to look at a simpler alternative

The V20 makes sense if the site is already standardised on Siemens, has its own service, and wants a proven German base for simple drives. If the brand is not essential and the task is typical (a single pump, fan or conveyor), an all-in-one ready unit such as Veichi AC310 or AC10 is often more cost-effective — a similar class of V/f drive, but cheaper and in our stock. Tell us the application and motor type and we will suggest both the right V20 version and, where it makes sense, a cheaper equivalent.
