Mitsubishi Electric FR-D Series Variable Frequency Drives
The FR-D series is a compact range of Mitsubishi Electric drives for small and medium-power applications: conveyors, fans, pumps, small machine tools and packaging equipment.
The catalog lists 18 models rated 0.75–15 kW; the range is made up of the FR-D720S, FR-D740, FR-D840 sub-series. The sub-series defines the supply voltage and power range, so start your selection there.
FR-D sub-series and power ranges
- FR-D720S — 1×220 V, 0.75–2.2 kW, 3 models
- FR-D740 — 3×380 V, 0.75–7.5 kW, 7 models
- FR-D840 — 3×380 V, 0.75–15 kW, 8 models
Key FR-D specifications
- Supply voltage: 1×220 V, 3×380 V
- Power range: 0.75–15 kW
- Sensorless vector control
- Digital inputs: 5, analog inputs: 2
- RS-485 interface with Modbus RTU
- Operator panel is built into the housing (not detachable)
- EMC filter: model-dependent, an option on some versions
- Built-in braking transistor
How to choose FR-D
Base the choice on the motor rated current from the nameplate, not on kW alone, and on the mains voltage: single-phase 220 V or three-phase 380 V. You can compare other Mitsubishi Electric ranges on the pages FR-E, FR-A, FR-F, and the full list of series is in the Mitsubishi Electric drives section.
For wiring and setup see the Mitsubishi drive wiring and setup guide, and for fault tracing the error codes and diagnostics article. Brand overview: Mitsubishi Electric drives.
FR-D FAQ
What power ratings does FR-D cover?
The catalog has 18 models rated 0.75–15 kW. The exact list is in the product grid above.
What supply voltage does FR-D need?
Voltage is set by the sub-series: FR-D720S — 1×220 V; FR-D740 — 3×380 V; FR-D840 — 3×380 V.
Does FR-D need an encoder card?
Typical applications do not need an encoder: the series runs sensorless vector control and U/f mode. If you need speed feedback, look at the FR-A series.
How do I match FR-D to my motor?
Compare the motor nameplate rated current with the drive rated current; the drive must not be lower. If you are unsure between sub-series, ask an engineer and we will match it to the load type.
