Invertek Optidrive E2 (ODE-2) — a simple V/f drive that just works, for pumps, fans and conveyors

The Optidrive E2 is the economy series from UK-based Invertek, built on the "Easy to Use Economy Drive" idea. The maker spells it out in the product line name — Volts-per-Hertz: this is a scalar (V/f) drive with no pretensions to complex motion control. In our range these are models from 0.7 to 7.5 kW in two input versions: single-phase 220 V with a three-phase 220 V output to the motor, and three-phase 380 V. The series is now discontinued (the successors are the Optidrive E3 and P2), so we supply it as a like-for-like replacement in existing panels and will honestly point you to a current equivalent.

What this drive is, and where it fits

• V/f (scalar) control: the Optidrive E2 is classic volts-per-hertz. There is no sensorless vector, no closed-loop encoder control and no built-in PLC. That is fine: a pump, a fan or a simple conveyor does not need vector control.
• Output frequency up to 500 Hz — enough for standard 50/60 Hz motors and for higher-speed spindles within the limits of scalar control.
• IP55 enclosure: a sealed housing you can mount next to the machine without a separate cabinet — handy on dirty or damp lines.
• Communication: the E2 series provides a built-in Modbus RTU over RS-485 for integration into basic automation.

Braking and EMC filter — check by part number

Braking on the E2 has a catch: the built-in braking transistor (a chopper for an external resistor) is not on every variant. The smaller single-phase and basic three-phase models often ship without a chopper, while the larger ones (frame size 2 and up, the …K04N part numbers) include the braking circuit. The same goes for the internal EMC filter: in the Invertek catalogue the three-phase 400 V EU variants usually carry an internal filter, but the exact build depends on the part number. So confirm the chopper, the EMC filter and the exact protection class by part number — we verify it against the datasheet before shipping, so you do not receive a "bare" unit where you actually need braking.
