Hitachi WL200 — compact frequency inverter for pumps, fans and simple machinery

If the job is turning a pump, fan, conveyor or gate and you do not need torque at zero speed, the WL200 covers it without overpaying. This is a V/f series: volts-per-hertz control, built-in PID, EzSQ programmable logic and Modbus RTU straight out of the box. Range runs 0.2 to 18.5 kW, with inputs for 1x220 V (SF models) and 3x380 V (HF models). If you instead need start-under-load, shaft holding or permanent-magnet motor drive (hoists, lifts, cranes), that is a different series — covered below.

How the WL200 differs from the WJ200

This is the most common question on the Hitachi line, so here it is short and honest. Both series share the same 0.2–18.5 kW range, the same supply classes, built-in PID, EzSQ, Modbus and the STO safe-stop function (ISO 13849-1, Cat 3). The difference is in how the motor is controlled.

The takeaway is simple: for a pump station, supply ventilation or a belt conveyor the WL200 does the same job as the pricier WJ200 for less money. The moment the task adds a hard start, precise torque holding or a synchronous PM motor, go for the Hitachi WJ200.

What the WL200 is good for

• Booster and borehole pumps: 1.5–7.5 kW, the built-in PID holds pressure without a separate controller — see inverters for pumps.
• Ventilation: air-handling units, roof fans. On a quadratic load the 120% headroom is plenty — browse inverters for fans.
• Simple machinery: conveyors, roller shutters, gates, textile and packaging machines where torque is needed at running speed, not at a loaded start.

When the WL200 is not the right pick

• You need 150–200% torque at low speed (hoists, winches, crushers) — go for the WJ200 with sensorless vector.
• Driving a synchronous PM motor — the WL200 does not control one; you need the WJ200 or another vector series from the Hitachi line.
• Looking for a specific power or brand for the job — start from the frequency inverter catalogue or filter for a 3x380 V supply.

Our experience with the WL200

The WL200 is a workhorse for pump-and-fan duties where vector control is not the point. The series is discontinued at the factory, so stock is usually one or two frame sizes kept for replacement and repair of already-installed systems. The 2.2 kW 3x380 model is the one most people ask for — a typical booster pump or mid-size fan. For a new project with room to grow we usually suggest a look at the WJ200 too: the price gap is small and vector control tends to pay off later.
