Control and what matters in practice

The series runs in two modes: V/Hz and sensorless (open-loop) vector with autotune. This is a compact drive — there is no encoder feedback, so for positioning or holding full torque at zero speed look at higher series. But for pumps, fans, conveyors and simple machine tools, sensorless vector gives smooth speed regulation and solid starting torque. Maximum output frequency is up to 400 Hz, with overload of 150% for 60 s (and 200% for 3 s).

Key feature — built-in brake transistor

A handy PowerFlex 40 feature engineers value: the brake transistor (brake chopper) is integral on all ratings. In practice that means you do not need a separate braking module for dynamic braking — just connect a low-cost external brake resistor. Communications and integration

Every drive has a built-in RS-485 port supporting DSI / Modbus RTU. Add-on adapter modules provide EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet, PROFIBUS-DP and LonWorks — which is exactly why the series is popular on integrated Rockwell lines. An honest word on selection

PowerFlex 40 is a previous-generation series (succeeded by PowerFlex 525), so it is most often bought as a like-for-like replacement on an existing line to avoid rewriting PLC code.
