ABB PSR Soft Starters — Ultra-Compact Protection for Basic Applications

The ABB PSR soft starter series is the most compact range in the ABB motor starting lineup. Engineered for electric motors from 1.5 to 55 kW, the PSR series features extreme space-saving dimensions (only 45 mm wide for frame sizes up to 15 kW / 30 A). This makes PSR an ideal drop-in replacement for traditional magnetic direct-on-line (DOL) or star-delta starters. An integrated bypass relay prevents heat generation and limits energy losses, reducing thermal stress on control panel enclosures.

Typical Applications for ABB PSR

• Compact Exhaust and Axial Fans: Provides a highly smooth starting profile to protect impellers, drive belts, and mechanical keyways.
• Rotary Screw Compressors: Accelerates the compressor block gently to avoid heavy shock loads on gears, splines, or flexible couplings.
• Lightweight Belt Conveyors: Soft starting eliminates starting jerks, preventing bulk materials or packaged items from falling off the belt.

What Differentiates ABB PSR from Competitors

A notable advantage of the PSR over the Siemens 3RW30 is the addition of a soft stop ramp. This is a critical feature for preventing sudden mechanical deceleration in fan systems and small inline pumps.

The PSR series represents a highly cost-efficient alternative to VFDs for basic ventilation system starting. For a clean, safe, and professional setup, we recommend mounting the PSR alongside an ABB MS116 or MS132 manual motor starter.
