ABB soft starter: which series we ship for which motor

We stock ABB in three series: PSR (compact, up to 55 kW), PSE (mid-range up to 132 kW) and PSTX (heavy duty up to 710 kW). Most of our customers are pumping-station technologists or plant chief electricians whose old soft starter has failed and needs a fast replacement with minimal panel rework.

Before we ship we ask four things. First: motor power and FLA from the nameplate (not the installation spec). Second: load type, since a pump or fan is one thing, a crusher or mill is something else. Third: whether the line already has its own bypass contactor, or we need a model with bypass built in. Fourth: supply voltage, because ABB makes one lineup for 208-600 V and a separate one up to 690 V.

PSR: when the cheapest one will do

PSR is what we ship for motors up to 55 kW with a standard start: pump, fan, unloaded conveyor. Bypass is already inside, heat dissipation is minimal. Our most-shipped SKUs are PSR25-600-70 (12 kW), PSR45-600-70 (22 kW) and PSR60-600-70 (30 kW). For an 11 kW well pump this is enough, as long as inrush stays under 3.5×Iн, otherwise PSR will trip.

PSE: when serious motor protection matters

PSE goes to industrial sites where downtime costs money. Overload monitoring, phase imbalance, ground-fault detection, Modbus RTU for SCADA. Range is 7.5-132 kW, typical SKUs in our warehouse: PSE45-600-70, PSE105-600-70 (55 kW), PSE170-600-70 (90 kW). One caveat: from PSE105 up the external bypass is not in the box, ask us separately.

PSTX: heavy duty with adaptive torque

PSTX is the top tier. Adaptive torque control, bypass built in across the whole line, Profinet out of the box, up to 710 kW. In our view, PSTX is worth the money only when you have a crusher, ball mill, or piston compressor; otherwise you overpay. Most often we ship PSTX105-600-70 (55 kW) for screw compressors and PSTX170 for feed grinders.

What else we ask and how long it takes

We ask about panel temperature (ABB holds nominal up to 40°C, above that you need to derate). We ask about starts per hour (PSR likes rare, PSTX handles up to 10 per hour). Two-year warranty, delivery from our Kyiv warehouse in 1-3 days for PSR and PSE; PSTX sometimes ships to order, lead time 5-10 days. Datasheet for any SKU available before payment.

PSR, PSE or PSTX — which ABB series should I take?

Look at the current, and at what the unit has to do. Our PSR range runs 4 to 105 A. A compact device with built-in bypass for a pump or fan without a hard start. The PSE covers 18-370 A and adds overload monitoring, phase imbalance detection, Modbus RTU. The PSTX works across 30-1050 A with adaptive torque control and Profinet out of the box. For an 11 kW borehole pump the PSR is plenty, provided the starting current stays under 3.5 times rated, otherwise the unit trips and has to be swapped after installation.

How much does an ABB soft starter cost?

The PSR opens at UAH 8,197 and reaches UAH 58,440 at 105 A. The PSE covers UAH 25,718 to 122,967. The PSTX starts at UAH 47,696, and the top 1050 A position costs UAH 539,690. We hold 55 ABB positions in total. Prices are live. Please confirm availability of a specific frame size with a manager.

Is an external bypass contactor needed for ABB?

Not for the PSR, nor anywhere in the PSTX range, their bypass sits inside. But from PSE105 upward the external bypass is no longer included, and that must be raised at the quotation stage. A line-side breaker is always required. Regardless of series.

What supply voltage do ABB soft starters accept?

The main PSR, PSE and PSTX ranges work across 208-600 V. Ukrainian 380 V is covered with margin. For networks up to 690 V, ABB builds separate versions, which we bring in to order. Ask about this early, because getting it wrong here is expensive.

How do I set up an ABB soft starter?

On the PSR it is potentiometers: ramp time and initial voltage. About five minutes of work, provided the unit already sits in the panel with front access rather than being buried behind half the cabinet. On the PSE and PSTX setup runs through the keypad and display, where protections are set as well. A sensible starting point for a centrifugal pump: 10-15 s ramp, 30-40% initial voltage. We send the series manual and wiring diagram with the invoice, before payment.

How many starts per hour does ABB handle?

The PSR and PSTX handle frequent starts better than units without a bypass, since theirs is built in. Smaller PSE frames also have one, larger ones need an external bypass. The general rule: above 6 starts per hour, take a model with a bypass. And remember derating above 40 °C inside the cabinet.

Does an ABB soft starter replace a VFD?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. A soft start removes the inrush during acceleration and gives a soft stop. Once up to speed the motor runs straight off the mains at 50 Hz. It cannot vary speed or hold pressure with a PID loop. That needs a variable frequency drive, a different class of equipment.

What if the PSR trips during starting?

The usual cause is an undersized frame for a heavy load. The PSR is rated for starts up to 3.5 times rated current, and if the machine breaks away harder than that, the unit trips. The fix is either moving to a PSE or PSTX with adaptive torque control, or going up a frame size. Send us the nameplate current and the load type and we will redo the sizing.
