ABB ACS480-04-09A5-4 — 4.0 kW, 3×380 V

An ACS480 drive rated 4 kW, 3-phase 380 V supply, frame R1. A frequent pick for water-supply pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors in food, textile and printing plants. Scalar and sensorless-vector modes, plus a built-in PID for standalone pressure or flow control.

Series standard: EMC C2 filter, brake chopper, Modbus RTU and STO SIL 3 / PL e — all in one compact IP20 enclosure. It is a basic drive without a full PLC; more complex logic is handled by an external controller or a higher ABB series.

ABB ACS480 frequency inverter: the essentials are already built in

The ACS480 is ABB's general-purpose drive, the successor to the ACS355 and ACS310 families. The idea is simple: ordinary speed-control jobs don't need a top-tier drive — they need one that runs out of the box. The ACS480 is exactly that: fans, pumps, compressors, conveyors and mills — basic applications where reliability and a low part count matter. Series range is 0.75–22 kW, 3-phase 380–480 V supply.

Built in as standard

The real value of the ACS480 is the kit that other series make you buy separately — here it ships in the base unit:

• EMC C2 filter for industrial and commercial (building) networks, no external filter needed;
• brake chopper — ABB specifies it as standard on all ACS480 drives (R1–R4, the full 0.75–22 kW range); only the brake resistor is external;
• Modbus RTU (RS-485) on the standard I/O module;
• Safe Torque Off (STO SIL 3 / PL e) for safe maintenance.

Control and capability

The ACS480 runs in scalar (V/f) and sensorless vector modes. Vector control gives accurate, energy-efficient speed control of induction, synchronous reluctance (SynRM) and PM motors. A built-in process PID, the PFC macro (up to four pumps/fans), timed functions and mechanical brake control cover the usual tasks without external logic. It is a basic drive: there is no full PLC and no closed-loop encoder control — for hard dynamics or positioning look at the ABB ACS580/ACS880.

Construction

Protection class IP20 (cabinet mount), frame sizes R1–R4, operation up to 50 °C with no derating. Optional plug-in adapters add PROFIBUS DP, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT and more. Note: the series has no single-phase 1×220 V input — for single-phase mains consider our Veichi AC10. As a closer-priced machinery alternative the Veichi AC310 fits well, and for the smallest ratings the compact AC01.
