ABB PSE Soft Starters — The First Compact Range with Integrated Protection

The ABB VLT® PSE soft starter series has been specifically designed to meet the demands of water supply and wastewater pumping applications. It is the world’s first compact soft starter to combine an integrated bypass contactor with fully featured electronic motor overload protection. Due to its advanced two-phase thyristor control layout, the PSE range features an exceptionally narrow frame, saving valuable electrical panel space while retaining high-end motor safety features.

Typical Applications for ABB PSE

• Submersible and Distribution Pumps: With built-in Torque Control, the PSE provides an exceptionally smooth stopping ramp for water pumps, completely eliminating water hammer hazards.
• Centrifugal Fans: Eliminates mechanical shock and damage to drive belts and shaft bearing units by providing low-torque smooth starts.
• Conveyors: Controlled acceleration prevents mechanical stress on drive gears and eliminates product spillage or belt stretching.

What Differentiates ABB PSE from Competitors

The key technological benefit of the PSE series is its true torque control algorithm. This algorithm dynamically adjusts motor torque based on feedback, rather than relying on simple voltage ramp approximations.

When ABB PSE is NOT Suitable

• For extreme industrial applications requiring very high startup loads (e.g., ball mills or heavy crushers) — choose the high-end three-phase ABB PSTX range instead.
• For very basic, lower-power ventilation units where motor protection is not required — the ABB PSR series represents a more cost-effective choice.
