RSP-500-48 is a Mean Well switching power supply delivering 48 V and about 504 W, with a rated output current of 10.5 A. A single-output unit in an enclosed metal case, with single-phase 85–264 VAC input, built-in active power factor correction (PFC) and the highest efficiency in the series at 90.5% — the higher voltage keeps current-related losses the lowest.

Mean Well RSP-500 — 500 W power supply with built-in power factor correction

RSP-500 is a series of high-power single-output Mean Well power supplies in a closed metal case, each rated for roughly 500 W from a single unit. The series has three models that differ only in output voltage: RSP-500-12 (12 V, 41.7 A), RSP-500-24 (24 V, 21 A) and RSP-500-48 (48 V, 10.5 A). All three run from a single-phase mains over a wide 85–264 VAC range, so they work equally well from a sagging 90 V or an elevated 264 V with no manual range switching. That makes RSP a convenient choice wherever mains quality is unstable.

The defining feature of the series is built-in active power factor correction (PFC). At around half a kilowatt this is no longer a formality but a requirement: active PFC reshapes the current drawn from the mains, reduces harmonics, and lets you use the full permitted input power. That is exactly why RSP-500 is chosen for installations where several loads sit side by side and every watt of input capacity counts.

Electrical specifications and protections

The enclosed case carries an IP20 rating — this is a unit for mounting inside an electrical cabinet or closed panel, not for the open outdoors. The operating temperature range is wide: from −30 °C to +70 °C, which lets you install RSP in unheated rooms and cabinets that heat up in summer (standard output derating applies at the upper temperatures). Efficiency rises with output voltage: 88% on the RSP-500-12, 89% on the RSP-500-24 and up to 90.5% on the RSP-500-48 — the higher the voltage, the lower the conduction losses.

• Over-voltage protection (OVP) — shields the load if the output drifts high.
• Overload protection (OLP) — limits current when the rated output is exceeded.
• Over-temperature protection (OTP) — derates or shuts the unit down at critical temperature.
• Active PFC — high power factor and correct interaction with the mains.
• Output voltage adjustment to compensate for drops on long supply runs.

Model choice follows the load voltage, and the 500 W headroom lets you power a whole group of devices or a single heavy unit.

• RSP-500-24 (24 V): the most universal model — powering PLCs and automation cabinets, banks of sensors and actuators, 24 V motors and solenoids, interface relays. This is the working voltage of most industrial automation.
• RSP-500-48 (48 V): telecom equipment and base stations, servo and stepper drives with 48 V supply, high-power LED strings and displays, charging of buffer battery packs.
• RSP-500-12 (12 V): long runs of 12 V LED lighting and signage, CCTV and alarm systems, 12 V peripherals with a high total current up to 41.7 A.

How RSP differs from other Mean Well series

Unlike the compact DIN-rail series (DR, NDR, MDR, HDR) that clip onto a standard rail and handle tens of watts, RSP is a closed «brick» for screw-mounting on a panel, built for hundreds of watts. Compared with the cheapest open-frame boards of the LRS series, RSP has a solid case and built-in PFC, so it suits finished cabinets and sites with mains-quality requirements better. If you need less power and DIN-rail mounting specifically, look toward the DR/NDR/MDR series; and when the lowest cost per watt without PFC matters most, toward LRS.
