12 kW hybrid inverter: when 10 kW is no longer enough
We typically install a 12 kW hybrid inverter in estates from 200 m², small farms and small businesses. Our customers this year run a large two-storey house with a pool plus a heat pump rated 8-10 kW plus an EV charger 7-11 kW. Or a small business: a car wash, a small workshop, a cafe with standard kitchen equipment. With 10 kW these setups sometimes hold back during peak hours. The 12 kW gives breathing room: peak surge 24 kW briefly. It holds simultaneous starts of 2-3 large compressors.
Operation is standard hybrid. When the grid is up, we draw from it in parallel. Surplus from PV panels goes into the battery or back to the grid (if you have Net Metering). Grid drops: the unit transfers to battery in 10-20 ms. No interruption. One caveat: a 12 kW inverter wants a 14-18 kW PV array. With 8-10 kW of panels there is no point taking it, undersized. With 18-20 kW of panels it works as designed.
Single-phase or three-phase: 12 kW is almost always three-phase
At 12 kW we almost always install three-phase 380 V. Our most-shipped unit is Veichi VHT-12K-25-H with MPPT 200-950 V (from the manufacturer datasheet). Alternative: VHT-12K-40-H with 40 A charge current, better for 16-18 kW arrays. Third option: Deye SUN-12K-SG04LP3-EU with Wi-Fi monitoring via SolarMan. Single-phase 12 kW is almost non-existent on the market. If your site has no three-phase service and needs more than 10 kW, the option is two parallel 6-8 kW inverters. What we ask before placing the order. First: what service the site has, how many kilowatts the technical conditions document allows. Because installing a 12 kW inverter on a 5 kW service makes no sense, you will not extract its capacity. Second: battery. A high-voltage 750 V battery is more expensive than 48 V lithium but gives higher efficiency on three-phase. Third: what the panel array will look like. Warranty 2-5 years, delivery from our Kyiv warehouse in 1-3 days.
