Frecon FR500A — universal vector-control variable frequency drive, 0.75–630 kW

FR500A is Frecon's flagship general-purpose VFD family with vector control. A single product range covers almost the entire span of motor-control tasks: from a small 0.75 kW pump or fan on single-phase 220 V up to a heavy 630 kW compressor or conveyor drive on three-phase 380 V. Thanks to sensorless vector control (SVC), the FR500A delivers high starting torque and tight speed regulation even without an encoder, so in most applications it replaces more expensive closed-loop drives straight out of the box.

Why vector control instead of plain U/f

The key difference between the FR500A and simple scalar inverters is that it actually "understands" the motor. The SVC algorithm provides 150% torque already at 0.5 Hz (and at 0.25 Hz in vector-2 mode), which is critical for machinery that must break away under load: hoists, extruders, crushers, piston pumps. Where a scalar drive stalls at start, the FR500A confidently turns the shaft. It still offers classic U/f mode for simple fans and pumps, where energy saving matters more than dynamics. Separated and semi-separated V/F control with automatic voltage compensation under load is supported.

Overload, braking and reliability

The FR500A is built for real industry, not lab conditions. Overload capacity is 150% for 1 min, 180% for 10 s and 200% for 1 s — headroom for shock loads and inrush. A braking chopper is built in up to and including 37 kW, and optional on 45–75 kW, so dynamic braking onto a resistor is available without external units exactly where it is most often needed. An independent air-cooling duct isolates the power stage from dust, and long-life, high-airflow fans extend service life in dirty workshops.

Wide voltage range and protection

The series runs on a 380–480 V rated voltage with a tolerated mains fluctuation of 323–528 V (50/60 Hz), so the drive works reliably even on weak grids with voltage sag. Comprehensive protection covers output and ground short circuit, motor overload, fan-circuit protection, external 24 V DC supply monitoring, plus optional motor temperature monitoring via PT100/PT1000. Fault response logic is configurable — from warning to shutdown or continued operation.

Communication, I/O and expansion

Out of the box the FR500A offers a flexible set of digital and analog I/O (DI, DO, AI, AO) with reassignable functions, a built-in PID controller with two parameter sets, pulse input/output up to 100 kHz, and built-in Modbus. Expansion cards add PROFIBUS, CANopen, PROFINET, EtherCAT, plus 4G and Wi-Fi for industrial-network integration and remote monitoring. Every model supports a common DC bus, convenient for multi-drive systems.

Where the FR500A is used

Typical applications include pumping stations and water-supply systems, ventilation and smoke extraction, conveyors, crushers, mixers, extrusion and winding lines, compressors and machine tools. Flexible design and built-in industry-specific application macros make the FR500A a true workhorse for OEM equipment builders. When selecting a model, size by motor power and rated current: for hard-starting motors choose the drive at or above the motor rating, while centrifugal pumps and fans may be sized by the lighter (P) duty.
