Industrial sensors: which type for your job

A typical customer of ours this year: a CNC shop installs inductive sensors on the turret. Photoelectric: on the conveyor. Pressure on press hydraulics. Plus an oil temperature probe. One shop easily burns 30-80 sensors a year. Replacement cycle is 1-3 years depending on the environment.

What we ask the customer before sizing
First question. Which parameter do you need to detect. Metal part position: inductive M12 or M18. Liquid level in a tank: float or ultrasonic. Pipe pressure: gauge or differential.
Second question is the environment. IP67 for a normal shop floor. IP69K for food-grade and high-pressure washdown. ATEX for hazardous zones with gas or dust. Third: output for your PLC. NPN for Japanese Mitsubishi/Omron. PNP for European Siemens/Schneider. Analog 4-20 mA for VFDs and controllers.
