Schneider Electric soft starters: which Altistart series we ship for what

Schneider Electric is what we install when the customer wants a soft starter with proven European quality and easy cabinet integration. We keep 127 Altistart models in stock, prices from 7 194 UAH. The lineup splits into 7 series for different jobs. ATS01 covers the compact segment up to 85 A for simple starts. ATS22 is the universal range 17-590 A with built-in bypass. ATS48 is the heavy line 17-1200 A for pumps. The new ATS480 and ATS490 generations (208-690 V) ship for 690 V networks. ATS130 covers specific industrial jobs.

Why customers pick Schneider over Danfoss or ABB. First: ATS22 with built-in bypass contactor out of the box. Thyristors work only during ramp (5-15 seconds), then current flows through the bypass relay. Heat dissipation in the cabinet is minimal, no extra fan needed. Second: a Modbus RTU module is available for the entire ATS22 and higher range, integrates into the industrial network without adapters. Third: documentation included. One caveat: ATS01 is the basic tier without extended protections. For responsible pumps we pick at least ATS22. How we size an Altistart series for the job

First question we ask: rated motor current from the nameplate. Plus load type (constant torque or quadratic for a pump). Second: starts per hour. Up to 6 you can run ATS01, since it has no bypass and the thyristors have time to cool. More than 10 per hour, must be ATS22 or ATS480 with built-in bypass. Third: do you need PLC communication via Modbus RTU or Profinet. If yes, ATS22 with the optional module. Alternative: ATS480 with Profinet out of the box.

ATS01, ATS22, ATS48 or ATS480 — which Altistart series?

The ATS01 is a compact 6-32 A unit for simple starts without extended protection. The ATS22 works across 17-590 A with a built-in bypass, the all-rounder. The ATS48 covers 17-1200 A and handles heavy pump duty, 42 positions in our stock. The ATS480 is the new generation at 17-1200 A with Profinet. There are also the ATS430, ATS490 and ATS130 for specific jobs.

How much does a Schneider Altistart soft starter cost?

The ATS01 opens at UAH 7,408, the ATS130 from UAH 21,592. The ATS22 covers UAH 23,741 to 235,257, the ATS48 works across UAH 14,639 to 437,195. The ATS430 starts at UAH 22,386, the ATS480 at UAH 32,169, and the top ATS490 position reaches UAH 621,859. We hold 136 Schneider positions in total.

What fault codes appear on the Altistart 22 and how do I clear them?

The most common are USF (undervoltage or a missing input phase) and PHF (phase loss). Both usually point at the supply rather than the unit: check the breaker, the terminals, plus the actual input voltage under load. On the ATS22 a fault is reset with the Stop key or by removing power. The full code list sits in the manual, which we send with the invoice.

How many starts per hour does an Altistart handle?

The ATS01 has no bypass and the thyristors need to cool, so up to 6 starts per hour. Above ten per hour you need an ATS22 or ATS480 with a built-in bypass. This is one of the three things we ask before sizing, alongside motor current plus load type. Above 40 °C in the cabinet, derating applies.

Does the Altistart offer PLC communication?

On the ATS22 a Modbus RTU module is available as an option and connects to an industrial network without adapters. The ATS480 carries Profinet out of the box. The basic ATS01 has no fieldbus at all. So when a project specifies SCADA communication, the choice narrows to an ATS22 with the module, or straight to the ATS480.

How does the ATS480 differ from the older ATS48?

The ATS480 is the new generation replacing the ATS48. Current ranges are similar, 17-1200 A for both, but the ATS480 has Profinet out of the box. It works to 690 V and integrates better with modern systems. The ATS48 remains a working series for pump duty, and we hold 42 of them against 20 ATS480. Both are current.

Does the Altistart replace a variable frequency drive?

No. A soft starter removes the inrush and gives a soft stop, which matters for pumps against water hammer. After acceleration the motor runs straight off the mains at 50 Hz. Varying speed or holding pressure with a PID loop is beyond the Altistart. If you need genuine speed control, look at Schneider Altivar drives.
