Control Techniques Unidrive M200 — compact general-purpose drive with onboard logic
The Unidrive M200 is the entry-level yet genuinely well-equipped member of Control Techniques' (now Nidec) Unidrive M family. It is a general-purpose AC drive for induction motors: it runs both scalar V/f control (linear Fixed and quadratic Square) and the manufacturer's own RFC-A sensorless vector algorithm. RFC-A is closed-loop current control without a position feedback device — the drive estimates rotor speed and flux from currents, voltages and motor parameters, so it holds torque on start-up and under shock loads better than a plain V/f converter.
What makes the M200 useful in practice
Onboard PLC. The M200 carries its own controller with a 16 kB user program, programmable in IEC 61131-3 languages. Simple logic (interlocks, counters, start sequences) can be handled without an external PLC — a feature most budget drives in this class lack.
Flexible communications. RS485/Modbus RTU is available onboard via the AI-485 adaptor, and SI- click-in modules add EtherCAT, CANopen, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Ethernet and DeviceNet. One drive fits both a simple link and a full fieldbus network.
180% overload. The Heavy Duty rating is built for hard starts — conveyors, crushers and machines with high-inertia loads.
Things to check before ordering
Honestly: the Unidrive M200 encodes many options directly in the part number, and you have to read them. The brake transistor (brake chopper) is fitted only on the B format variant; the A format ships "without brake", so dynamic braking with a resistor needs either the right part number or an external braking module. Likewise the internal EMC filter and a keypad potentiometer depend on the variant (the M201 differs from the M200 by an integrated speed-reference potentiometer). Always confirm the exact build by the full part number.
What to fit today
The M200 itself belongs to the Unidrive M platform, which is past its active-promotion phase (the current successors are the M300/M400 with wider functionality). Both the M200 and the whole Unidrive M line remain a great choice as a drop-in replacement for what is already in the cabinet. If you are specifying a drive for a new machine from scratch and are not tied to the Nidec ecosystem, look at our Veichi converters — the versatile Veichi AC310 with vector control and a built-in PLC covers the same jobs, while the compact AC10 suits simple pump and fan drives. We will help you match it to your motor and load.
