Delta DVP PLC: Review of SS2, SA2, SX2 and SV2 Series

The Delta Electronics DVP PLC series has long established itself as a reliable and cost-effective range of industrial controllers for mid-level automation. The DVP lineup spans several sub-series, each targeting specific application needs — from compact solutions for small machines to feature-rich systems with advanced communication capabilities. This article covers the four most popular series — DVP-SS2, DVP-SA2, DVP-SX2 and DVP-SV2 — and helps you decide which one fits your project best.

What Is Delta DVP and Where Is It Used

DVP (Delta Versatile PLC) is a range of modular and brick-style industrial controllers manufactured by Delta Electronics (Taiwan). They are widely used in production line automation, packaging, material handling, woodworking, food processing and chemical industries. Native compatibility with Delta VFD frequency inverters and Delta servo drives over RS-485 / MODBUS RTU makes DVP the natural choice for a unified Delta automation ecosystem.

Programming is done in WPLSoft (the classic environment, compatible with all DVP series) and ISPSoft (modern IEC 61131-3 IDE supporting LD, FBD, SFC, ST, IL). Both tools are free to download from the Delta Electronics website.

DVP-SS2 — Compact Entry-Level Controller

DVP-SS2 is the base model of the second-generation DVP lineup. The 8 DI / 6 DO configuration without built-in analog processing makes it ideal for straightforward tasks: conveyor control, pneumatic cylinders, pump stations with simple logic. The compact 60 mm wide housing fits easily into tight control cabinets.

The RS-485 port supports up to 32 devices on a MODBUS RTU network — for example, variable frequency drives or HMI panels. If you need analog channels or additional I/O later, simply add DVP expansion modules. DVP-SS2 is the most cost-effective entry point into the Delta DVP ecosystem.

DVP-SA2 — Built-In Analog Processing

DVP-SA2 extends the SS2 base with two analog inputs (0–10 V or 0–20 mA) and one analog output. This allows direct connection of pressure, temperature or flow sensors, and direct control of modulating valves — no external modules required.

Typical applications include temperature control systems, ventilation units and pump systems with PID regulation. The built-in PID function block simplifies closed-loop control without custom ladder code. For more complex systems with multiple control loops, the SA2 can be easily extended with analog expansion modules.

DVP-SX2 — Maximum Analog Flexibility in the Base Unit

DVP-SX2 offers the richest analog resource set in the standard DVP block: four AI and two AO channels. For most analog-intensive applications, this eliminates the need for any external modules. ADC resolution is 12 bits, meeting the requirements of the vast majority of industrial sensors.

The second RS-485 port allows you to segregate networks — one for VFD drives, one for an HMI or SCADA system. This simplifies cable routing and improves communication reliability in complex installations. SX2 is the best choice for process systems with mixed discrete and analog requirements.

DVP-SV2 — High-Performance Motion Control Flagship

DVP-SV2 is the top model in the DVP lineup for demanding applications in machine-building and precision positioning. Its defining advantage is the high-speed HSC counter frequency (up to 200 kHz) and pulse output frequency (up to 200 kHz), enabling direct control of Delta servo drives and stepper motors without a separate motion controller.

16 DI / 12 DO in the base configuration, 16K steps of program memory and two RS-485 ports make the SV2 suitable for complex multi-axis machines. Support for DDRVI, DPLSY and DABS instructions in the DVP instruction set allows profile motion to be implemented directly in Ladder Diagram. If your project involves synchronised servo systems or precision dosing, DVP-SV2 is the right choice.

Comparison with Alternatives

Delta DVP wins on price and native integration within the Delta ecosystem. If your project demands more: Industrial Ethernet, larger memory, or MES/ERP integration — consider Siemens S7-1200/S7-1500 PLCs or Mitsubishi FX5U/iQ-F PLCs. For most mid-complexity automation tasks, DVP remains one of the most balanced price-to-functionality options available.

Programming: WPLSoft and ISPSoft

WPLSoft is the classic programming environment for the entire DVP lineup. It supports LD, IL and SFC. The interface is straightforward and familiar to engineers with experience on other brands' PLCs. It is well suited for fast commissioning.

ISPSoft is the modern alternative with full IEC 61131-3 support: LD, FBD, SFC, ST (Structured Text) and IL. The built-in task manager, real-time watch debugger and CANopen configurator integration speed up development of complex programs. ISPSoft is recommended for new projects, especially when future migration to Delta's higher-end AS or AX series PLCs is planned.
