Home solar power system — what is included
A residential solar power system consists of four main parts: solar panels, inverter, batteries, and mounting hardware. A turnkey 5 kW system costs 130,000 to 220,000 UAH depending on configuration. Without batteries — from 80,000 UAH.
We have assembled hundreds of these systems over the past years. The typical mistake is skimping on the inverter or battery and buying upgrades later. It is smarter to plan the full configuration upfront.
Solar panels — the heart of the system
Panels generate electricity from sunlight. The current standard for homes is monocrystalline 500 W panels with PERC or TOPCon technology.
- Capacity per home: 5-10 kW (10-20 panels at 500 W)
- Roof area: 24-48 m² for 10-20 panels
- Price: 3,000-4,000 UAH per 500 W panel
- Lifespan: 25-30 years under warranty
Choose Tier 1 manufacturers (JA Solar, Longi, Trina Solar). More details in our solar panel selection guide.
Inverter — the brain of the system
The inverter converts DC from panels to 220V AC for household appliances.
Grid-tie inverter (on-grid)
Works only when the grid is up. Cheapest option. Suits stable grids where the goal is lower bills or selling excess via feed-in tariff. Price: 15,000-30,000 UAH for 5 kW.
Hybrid inverter
Works with grid, panels, and batteries simultaneously. Switches to batteries in 10-20 ms during outages. For Ukrainian conditions with frequent blackouts — the most practical choice. Price: 25,000-60,000 UAH for 5 kW. More in our hybrid inverter article.
Off-grid inverter
Works entirely without grid. For remote locations. Rare choice — most people pick hybrid instead.
Batteries — reserve for night and outages
| Parameter | LiFePO4 | Li-ion (NMC) | Lead-acid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charge cycles | 6,000+ | 3,000-4,000 | 500-1,000 |
| Lifespan | 15-20 years | 8-12 years | 3-5 years |
| Price per kWh | 5,000-7,000 UAH | 4,500-6,000 UAH | 2,000-3,000 UAH |
| Depth of discharge | 90-95% | 80-90% | 50% |
| Safety | Non-flammable | Thermal runaway risk | Emits hydrogen |
LiFePO4 is the clear winner. Over 15 years it costs 2-3x less than lead-acid (fewer replacements). Details in our LiFePO4 guide.
How much capacity do you need
- Evening/night reserve (5-8 hours): 5-10 kWh
- Full day off-grid: 15-20 kWh
- 2-3 days without grid: 30-50 kWh
Additional components
- Mounting system — aluminium rails and brackets. Price: 3,000-8,000 UAH for 10 panels.
- Cables and MC4 connectors — solar cable 4-6 mm², UV-resistant. Price: 1,500-3,000 UAH.
- Protection — DC breakers, SPD (surge protection), AC breakers. Price: 2,000-5,000 UAH.
- Meter — bidirectional for feed-in tariff.
- Monitoring — inverter Wi-Fi module (often included).
Turnkey pricing: three packages
| Package | Components | Turnkey price |
|---|---|---|
| Grid-tie 5 kW | 10 x 500 W panels + grid inverter + mounting | 80,000-120,000 UAH |
| Hybrid 5 kW + 10 kWh | 10 x 500 W panels + hybrid inverter + LiFePO4 10 kWh | 170,000-230,000 UAH |
| Hybrid 10 kW + 20 kWh | 20 x 500 W panels + hybrid inverter + LiFePO4 20 kWh | 350,000-480,000 UAH |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build the system in stages?
Yes. Start with panels and a hybrid inverter, add batteries later. The key is to get an inverter with battery support and 20-30% spare capacity from the start.
How long until the system pays for itself?
Grid-tie without batteries: 4-6 years with feed-in tariff. Hybrid with batteries: 7-10 years, but provides backup during outages.
Do I need a feed-in tariff?
Not necessarily. The feed-in tariff lets you sell excess to the grid. Without it, the system still works — excess is either lost or stored in batteries.
How much roof space does 5 kW need?
10 panels at 500 W take ~24 m². With edge offsets, plan for 30-35 m². For precise calculations you need roof geometry.
Is a home solar system noisy?
Panels are silent. The inverter has a fan at 30-45 dB under load (quieter than a fridge). Install it in a utility room, not a bedroom.
