How to Choose Solar Panels for a Private Home

Solar Panel Types: Which One to Choose

Before buying solar panels, understand the three main technologies. Each suits different conditions and budgets.

Monocrystalline Panels

Efficiency 20–23% — highest among mainstream options. Compact, perform well in diffuse light, last 25–30 years.

Polycrystalline Panels

10–15% cheaper than monocrystalline. Efficiency 16–18%. Best for large roofs.

Thin-Film Panels

Efficiency 10–14%. Handle partial shading best. Rarely optimal for standard homes.

Panel Wattage: 400 W, 500 W, or 600 W

  • 400 W — for systems up to 10 kW.
  • 500 W — optimal balance of size and power.
  • 600 W — for 15+ kW systems. Lowest cost per watt.
