Why Mean Well Has So Many Series — And How to Navigate Them
Mean Well designs PSUs for distinct applications: compact DIN-rail mounting for automation panels, high-power enclosed units for machinery, telecom-grade series, and redundancy-ready models. Each series is a tradeoff between size, power, price, and technical features.
This article covers six series from our Mean Well power supply catalog: DR, HDR, MDR, NDR, LRS, and RSP.
DR — Standard DIN-Rail Series for Everyday Use
DR is Mean Well's workhorse for DIN-rail mounting. Fixed outputs of 12, 24, or 48 V, power range 15–120 W, no active PFC. Price range: 858–1838 UAH. Suitable for relays, signal circuits, sensors, small PLCs, and HMI panels in standard environments.
HDR — Ultra-Slim DIN-Rail Series at the Lowest Entry Price
HDR units are significantly thinner than DR — critical for dense mounting in narrow cabinets. Available in 12, 24, and 48 V; 15–100 W; no PFC. Price from 485 UAH — the lowest entry point of any Mean Well series in our catalog. Budget project choice: HDR-15-12 at 485 UAH.
MDR — Mid-Range DIN Series With PFC in One Model
MDR covers 20–96 W; voltages 5, 12, 24, and 48 V; price 586–1616 UAH. Active PFC only in MDR-100 — the rest of the MDR line has none. If the project specification requires power factor correction at ~100 W, MDR-100 is the correct choice, not just any MDR model.
NDR — High-Power DIN-Rail Series for Demanding Loads
NDR is the most powerful DIN-rail series in our catalog: 75–480 W, outputs 12, 24, and 48 V, with parallel current sharing and Vadj voltage trimming. Price: 1060–5077 UAH.
PFC only in NDR-240 and NDR-480 — NDR-75 and NDR-120 do not have PFC. Recommended: NDR-240-24 at 2265 UAH — 10 A, active PFC, DIN-rail.
LRS — Enclosed Series With the Best Price-per-Watt
LRS is a closed (enclosed) series: metal chassis, screw-mounted inside a cabinet. Not for DIN-rail. Voltages 12, 24, 36, and 48 V; 50–350 W; no PFC. Price from 495 UAH — the best watts-per-UAH ratio among all Mean Well series. LRS-100-24 at 640 UAH — 100 W, 24 V, 4.5 A: ideal for machine control panels.
RSP — High-Power Enclosed Series With Active PFC
RSP is a ~500 W enclosed series with active PFC. Voltages 12, 24, and 48 V. Supports parallel operation. Price: 4443–4645 UAH. The choice for systems requiring power factor correction — especially when connected to generators or UPS.
Series Selection Table
| Series | Form Factor | Power | Voltages, V | PFC | Parallel | Price from, UAH | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DR | DIN-rail | 15–120 W | 12/24/48 | No | No | 858 | Standard DIN, budget |
| HDR | DIN ultra-slim | 15–100 W | 12/24/48 | No | No | 485 | Narrow cabinets, lowest price |
| MDR | DIN-rail | 20–96 W | 5/12/24/48 | MDR-100 only | No | 586 | Mid-range; MDR-100 when PFC required |
| NDR | DIN high-power | 75–480 W | 12/24/48 | NDR-240/480 | Yes | 1060 | High DIN power, parallel, PFC |
| LRS | Enclosed | 50–350 W | 12/24/36/48 | No | No | 495 | Best price/watt, enclosed mount |
| RSP | Enclosed high-power | ~500 W | 12/24/48 | Yes | Yes | 4443 | ~500 W, PFC, parallel, enclosed |
Decision Algorithm
- 1. Form factor: DIN → DR, HDR, MDR, NDR. Enclosed → LRS, RSP.
- 2. Power: under 100 W → HDR or DR. 100–200 W → NDR-120/240. 200–500 W → NDR-480 or LRS-350. ~500 W with PFC → RSP.
- 3. PFC required: MDR-100, NDR-240/480, or RSP. Not required → any series.
- 4. Parallel operation needed: NDR or RSP only.
