Motortronics soft starters: when PFE, Agility or SYNERGY makes sense

We do not specify Motortronics for every soft starter job. It makes sense when the site already has this brand installed, the panel is built around a known Motortronics series, or the project needs a US soft starter line with internal bypass and useful diagnostics. Our catalog currently has 42 active Motortronics SKUs across PFE, Agility and SYNERGY.

Start with the motor nameplate current, not with the kW label. Then check supply voltage, starts per hour, load inertia and whether the process needs a controlled stop. A pump is one case. A crusher or heavy conveyor is another.

How to choose Motortronics by motor current, not only by kW

PFE covers small motors and compact cabinets. Agility is the practical line up to 200 kW in our catalog, with a 200-600 V range. SYNERGY is for heavier applications where diagnostics, communications and current headroom matter. One detail: do not treat PFE as a power-factor correction unit. In this catalog it is a compact soft starter with internal bypass; if reactive power is the problem, the compensation bank is selected separately.

Model Series Current 400 V motor Typical fit
VMX-PFE-10 PFE 16 A 7.5 kW Small pump, fan or compact DIN-rail panel.
VMX-PFE-18 PFE 41 A 22 kW Top end of PFE when the start is simple and the panel should stay small.
VMX-AGY-203 Agility 106 A 55 kW Pumps, conveyors and fans with a standard start profile and bypass.
VMX-AGY-305 Agility 361 A 200 kW Larger machines where Motortronics is required in the 200-600 V range.
VMX-SGY-401-4-03 SYNERGY 610 A 355 kW Heavy start, event log, communications and detailed diagnostics.

Soft starter brands to compare

If Motortronics is not locked into the project, compare it with Danfoss MCD, Schneider Altistart and ABB PSR/PSE/PSTX. For budget projects, check Veichi SS70. These are not one-to-one replacements, but for a standard pump or fan they can be faster to source.

Keep Motortronics in the request when the series is specified by the designer, when an existing panel already uses it, or when replacement without redesign matters. In that case we verify current, frame size and control wiring first.

Motortronics by series and current

To narrow the choice, open PFE, Agility or SYNERGY. For pump applications, also see soft starters for pumps. If the motor must change speed after starting, use a frequency inverter instead of a soft starter.

Warranty and support

Before ordering, we ask for a photo of the motor nameplate and a short note about the load: pump, compressor, fan, conveyor or something else. That prevents current and thermal-class mistakes. We ship across Ukraine, help with replacement options and say directly where Motortronics is justified and where another series will do the job for less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Motortronics series should I choose: PFE, Agility or SYNERGY?

Use PFE for small motors up to 22 kW in compact panels. Agility fits standard pumps, fans and conveyors up to 200 kW in our catalog. SYNERGY is the line to check for heavier starts, diagnostics, event logging and communications.

How is Motortronics different from Schneider, ABB or Danfoss?

Motortronics is usually selected when the project specifies it or when an existing panel already uses the brand. Schneider, ABB and Danfoss are often easier for standard sourcing. If the brand is open, we compare motor current, delivery time and required functions.

Can a Motortronics soft starter replace a frequency inverter?

No. A soft starter reduces mechanical and electrical stress during start and can control stopping, but the motor runs from the mains after acceleration. If the motor must change speed, hold pressure or run PID control, use a frequency inverter.

Should a soft starter be wired for two-wire or three-wire control?

It depends on the control circuit. Two-wire control is common for a simple run command, while three-wire control is used with separate Start and Stop buttons. Before selection, we check the automation diagram and control voltage.

Does Motortronics need bypass?

The PFE, Agility and SYNERGY series in our catalog use internal bypass. It reduces heat after acceleration because the thyristors do not carry the full running current all the time. That usually means less panel heat and simpler ventilation.

Is PFE a power-factor correction unit?

No. We treat PFE as a compact soft starter with internal bypass. If the issue is reactive power, a separate capacitor bank or a power-quality check is required.
