Braking Resistors — Dissipating VFD Braking Energy

A braking resistor converts the motor kinetic energy into heat during deceleration or speed reduction. Without it, the DC bus voltage of the variable frequency drive rises to alarm level, triggering an OV (overvoltage) fault and emergency stop. Resistors are essential for lifting mechanisms, centrifuges, woodworking machines, and any system with frequent or intensive braking.

How to Select a Braking Resistor

Two key parameters: resistance (Ohm) and dissipation power (kW). Resistance must match the minimum value specified in the VFD manual. Power depends on the load kinetic energy and braking cycle frequency: for standard braking — 10-20% of VFD power, for intensive braking — 50-100%.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a braking resistor needed for a VFD?

A braking resistor dissipates energy returned from the motor during deceleration or speed reduction. Without it, the DC bus voltage rises to alarm level, triggering an OV (overvoltage) fault and stopping. Resistors are necessary for: lifting mechanisms, centrifuges, woodworking machines, and any system with frequent braking.

How to select a braking resistor by power?

Braking resistor power depends on the load kinetic energy and braking frequency. Approximately: for standard braking — 10-20% of VFD power, for frequent intensive braking — 50-100% of VFD power. Resistor resistance must match the minimum resistance specified in the VFD manual (typically 20-400 Ohm).

Is a separate braking module needed?

Some VFDs have a built-in braking transistor (chopper) — they only need an external resistor. Other models require a separate braking module + resistor. Check your VFD specification. Delta VFD C2000 and CH2000 series have built-in choppers up to 22 kW. For higher power — an external braking module is needed.

Where should a braking resistor be installed?

The resistor should be installed outside the electrical cabinet due to significant heat dissipation. Minimum distance from combustible materials is 100 mm. Ensure free air circulation around the resistor. For power ratings above 1 kW, resistors in aluminum housings with fans are recommended. Cable length from VFD to resistor — up to 10 meters.
