Schneider Electric Magelis STO — compact 3.4" operator panels

The Magelis STO series from Schneider Electric is a range of compact monochrome operator panels featuring a 3.4-inch display with 200x80 pixel resolution. STO panels are designed for basic control and monitoring of industrial equipment where a colour display is unnecessary, yet a reliable and user-friendly human-machine interface (HMI) is essential.

The screen uses a monochrome STN LCD matrix with backlighting (green or white depending on the model). All panels in the series feature touch-screen operation, USB ports (host and client) for programming and data exchange, and a compact housing suitable for panel-mount installation.

STO series technical specifications

All five STO models share the same display size and resolution, but differ in their communication interfaces and supported protocols:

  • Display: 3.4" monochrome STN LCD, 200x80 pixels
  • Control: touch screen
  • USB: host + client on all models
  • Interfaces: RS232, RS485, Ethernet (model-dependent)
  • Protocols: Zelio Logic, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP

Applications

Magelis STO panels are used where a compact text-and-graphic interface is sufficient:

  • Pump station control — monitoring pressure, flow rates, and alarm states
  • Ventilation systems — temperature control, fan operating mode management
  • Conveyor lines — sensor status display, start/stop control
  • Compressor equipment — mode indication, parameter adjustment
  • Small-scale production systems — integration with Zelio Logic relays (HMISTO501) or PLCs via Modbus

The HMISTO501 model works exclusively with Zelio Logic SR2/SR3 smart relays, while the HMISTO511-532 models support connection to any PLC via Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP/IP protocols.

Other operator panel series

In addition to the STO series, our catalogue includes other Schneider Electric panels:

  • STU series — colour touch panels in 3.5" and 5.7" sizes with enhanced visualisation capabilities
  • XBT series — full-featured Magelis panels with larger screen sizes (29 models)

Warranty and support

Schneider Electric Magelis STO panels are supplied with the manufacturer's official warranty. We provide technical advice on model selection, PLC connectivity, and communication interface configuration. Delivery across Ukraine via Nova Poshta and Ukrposhta.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an HMI panel and a PLC?

A PLC runs the automation logic, while the HMI shows the machine state and sends operator commands to the controller or VFD. If you need I/O and control logic, use a PLC. If you need a screen with buttons, alarms and setpoints, use an HMI.

Which HMI screen size should I choose for a control cabinet?

For a simple machine, 4.3-5.7 inches is usually enough. A 7-inch panel works well for pump stations, ventilation and small machines. Choose 10.1 inches or larger when the operator needs trends, recipes, alarm logs or several mimic screens.

Does an operator panel need Ethernet?

Ethernet is useful for Modbus TCP/IP, several controllers, remote service or connection to the plant network. If the panel is next to one VFD and communicates over RS-485, Modbus RTU is often enough.

Can an HMI be connected directly to a VFD?

Yes, if the VFD supports Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP and the register map is available. For Veichi drives we often check VI20 or VI30 panels because they fit Veichi-based control cabinets well.

What information is needed to replace an old operator panel?

Send the old panel part number, cutout size, supply voltage, port type, protocol and the project file if it is available. Without the project file, the screen project often has to be rebuilt.

Can you select an HMI for a specific PLC?

Yes. Send the PLC or VFD model, required screen size and communication method. We will check the ports and suggest the series that fits the project best.
