Dexterous Robotic Hand — What It Is and Where It Is Used
A dexterous robotic hand is an anthropomorphic end-effector with five independently actuated fingers that replicate human hand movement. Unlike a two-jaw industrial gripper, a dexterous hand performs complex manipulations: grasping irregular objects, assembling small components, and interacting with tools and door handles.
The Veichi YZ-T6 is currently the only dexterous hand in our catalogue: five fingers, six active plus five passive degrees of freedom (DOF), 2.8 N fingertip force, carbon fibre frame, RS-485 interface. Compatible with humanoid platforms and robotic systems wherever human-like manipulation is required.
Core application areas: R&D laboratories and universities, rehabilitation and prosthetics, service robotics (hospitality, healthcare, nuclear plant inspection), humanoid development programs, HRI (human-robot interaction) research, and defence and search-and-rescue robotics. For heavy-duty industrial gripping tasks, see the gripper catalogue.
How to Choose a Dexterous Robotic Hand
| Parameter | YZ-T6 | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Active DOF | 6 | Independent actuators — 6 degrees of freedom for flexible manipulation |
| Passive DOF | 5 | Comply with object shape elastically, no motors required |
| Finger count | 5 | Full anthropomorphic hand |
| Fingertip force | 2.8 N | Grasp up to ~285 g (shape-dependent) |
| Interface | RS-485 | Direct integration with PLCs or SBCs via Modbus RTU |
| Frame material | Carbon fibre | Light and rigid — critical for distal arm segments |
1. DOF and manipulation type. Six active DOF enable independent joint control over RS-485. Five passive DOF provide adaptive grip — the hand conforms to irregular object shapes without separate control signals.
2. Force and payload. 2.8 N is the fingertip force for a single finger. Combined grip across all fingers is considerably higher. For comparison: a two-jaw industrial gripper delivers 50–200 N — faster and stronger, but incapable of anthropomorphic manipulation tasks. See grippers in the catalogue.
3. RS-485 interface. Connects to PLCs, Raspberry Pi/Jetson, or a humanoid's onboard computer via Modbus RTU or Veichi's native protocol. Python command libraries are available in the product documentation.
4. Chirality. YZ-T6 is available in left-hand and right-hand configurations. Order a matched pair for bimanual systems. Specify chirality when ordering.
5. IP rating. The current YZ-T6 has no published IP rating — recommended for sealed laboratory and industrial environments without moisture or dust exposure.
Manufacturers in the Catalogue
Veichi Electric manufactures the YZ-T6 as part of the Veichi Humanoid programme (2024–2026). YZ-T6 is positioned as an OEM component for integrators and Veichi's own humanoid development. Related categories: RB/FT1/ECH drive modules, PG planetary gearboxes, full Veichi Robotics catalogue.
