Use of frequency converters for power drives of elevators

Frequency Converters for Elevators: Features and Advantages

The use of frequency converters for elevator power drives has a number of unique features that form the basis for ensuring effective operation and safety.

Smooth Motion and Safety

Firstly, it is important to ensure high smoothness at the start of movement, both during ascent and descent, as well as during stops.

In addition, depending on the load from passengers or cargo, the load on the motor shaft can vary significantly. This requires appropriate adaptation of the drive's operating mode.

Safety requirements for elevators are extremely high, so emergency stops are highly undesirable. The drive control system must include various protective mechanisms against various failures, overloads, and deviations from normal conditions.

Advantages of C2000 Series Frequency Converters

All these requirements have been considered by the developers of the C2000 series frequency converters from Delta Electronics, which are specially designed for elevators and lifts.

The electronic system of this series is managed by a powerful programmable logic controller based on a 32-bit processor. It utilizes advanced vector control technology with a closed feedback loop:

  • Frequency-adjustable control;
  • Torque control of the shaft;
  • Vector control without the use of sensors.

High-precision control of shaft rotational speed ensures maximum smoothness of motion, guaranteeing comfort and safety for elevator passengers.

It is also worth noting that recently developed methods for compensating for inverter dead time have allowed for reduced noise levels and significant losses. These technologies rely on a wide pulse modulator, combined with dynamic carrier frequency modulation, connecting the motor to a battery, thus allowing the elevator to reach the nearest floor.

Main Characteristics of AS320 Series

The main characteristics of the AS320 series converters include:

  • Rated converter power – from 2.3 to 130 kVA;
  • Rated output current – from 6.0 to 165 kA;
  • Serviced motor power – from 1.1 to 75 kW;
  • Power supply voltage – three-phase, frequency 50/60 Hz, ratings: 380/400/415/440/460 V.

For the normal operation of the converter, a temperature range of -10 ℃ to +45 ℃, humidity up to 95%, and the absence of dust and chemically aggressive contaminants in the atmosphere are recommended.
